2000+ TL is faster by .5 seconds in the 0-60 due to more low-end torque

more low end torque, better intake system, better gearing. Although because of the low end torque increase us 99 TLs could possibly outrun our 2000+ brothers in the high end (80 mph+). Not sure though

Ive actually heard because of the gearing, the 2000-2001 picks up speed a lil quicker on the top end than the 99's...

Yes, if you consider the different intakes to still result in the same engine. '01 and above has a revised intake resulting in a better torque spread, and of course an extra gear to better spread that torque around.

Consider the MB SLK320 vs SLK32 AMG: it's more or less the same engine, but supercharged in the AMG. For that matter, the Acura 3.2 is derived from the Honda 3.0 engine, and that block runs from 200 to 260 HP depending on the application.

I bet we'll see about 290 HP from that block within a couple of years. Actually, right now you can get 290 HP by installing Comptech headers on a stock TL-S or CL-S, so you're looking at a 90 HP difference between that car and an Accord...all with the "same" engine.

well for what its worth...when I raced my 2000 against pimpntl's 99, from 0-60, we were very close. I was ahead by only a bumper. But once my 3rd gear kicked in, I could tell he was fading. quarter miles times between the two would be quite different for sure.

The 00-01's don't have more low end torque.. it's quicker simply because of the transmission. By going from 4 speed to 5 speed, it enables them to revise(lower) the axle driving gears. The lower the gear(numerically higher) the quicker the wheels are to turn, hence better acceleration.

According to published figures from Honda (Acura), the 2000 3.2TL had a Free flowing Intake manifold and a plethora of other intake modifications over the 1999 TL, that improved low-end torque and also mid-range power over the 1999 TLs, even though the peak HP and Torque figures remained the same at 225/216.

In addition to the engine intake changes, the 2000 3.2TL also received a 5-speed transmission with slightly more aggressive gearing in the lower gears, and an additional 5th gear for cruising at very low rpm.....in the 1999 TL, the 3rd gear itself becomes slightly over-driven (gear ratio less than 1.0), unlike the 2000 TL where the 3rd gear is not over-drive and the 4th gears onward is over-drive gears....over-driven gears (for people not in the know), will not help you in acceleration and will only help in improving your mileage....

These transmission changes also improved the EPA highway mileage from 27mpg (in the 1999 TL) to 29mpg (in the 2000 TL)....

Were both your cars, stock to stock ? Or did one of the cars have different tire-wheel combination or any other changes that can materially affect acceleration timings ?

For example, if the 99 TL had grippier tires of the same size as stock and the 2000 TL had different (larger and heavier) aftermarket rims and tires, then it is not a stock to stock comparison....
