Painting Mud Gaurds?

I was wondering if we can paint out TL mud guards to match the exterior of the car, if so what do I have to do first?

My friend has a 2000 RL and all for of his guards are painted to match his car, its looks nice and hides the fact that there are mudguards on it.

So any help would be appreciated, do I have to sand it down? Prime and stuff like that? I am not familiar with the painting process so bear with me.

I'm not big into painting and stuff but from my personal experience I would recommend the following steps.

1. Sand and prep
2. Get a couple of coats of primer on there.
3. Paint it the color you want. Probably a couple of coats on this, too.
4. Finish it off with clearcoat.

EDIT -- I just realized this was my 8000th post!!

What do I have to buy? Are these available at the local wal-mart?

I'd be interested in knowing how it comes out if you do it. I helped my friend put the mud guards on his G35 and they are also painted. As far as buying the stuff, you probably can't get the paint from Walmart, but you may be able to get the primer and clear coat there or at an autoparts store. Good luck.

I refuse to do business with Wal-Mart. I have never shopped there and I never will. So I don't know if they have any of the necessary materials.

However, I can tell you what you will need.

Sandpaper - fine, not coarse. You just want to lightly sand it so that the primer will stick well.

Primer - one can should do for all 4 mudguards.

Paint - your choice of color. I would get one or two cans depending on how many coats you want to do.

Clearcoat - one can should suffice

You can easily find all of these at Home Depot.

Being the mudgaurds are flexable, id find a Auto paints store, have them color match the paint, and add a flex additive to teh paint.

Yeah, if you don't use a flex additive, the paint will chip off pretty quickly...I will guarantee that. GOOD LUCK!!

When I do paint them, should I paint the insides as well (as in the side that faces the wheels)? Or should I just do the outsides?

Just the outside. The inside will get chipped up quickly and look hideous very fast.
