P0740 Time to say goodbye to the TL soon

I just got hit with the P0740 CEL, VSA, SRS 140k 02 TL type S . Might be time to let it go. I know a lot of people here have been able to do the 06-07 Accord v6 swap. I don't know any shops that will do it. Might be time to give up and get a new ride. I've been looking to just get a hyundai sonata, I've got a budget of about 20k and another kid on the way. Any suggestions?

did a 4x4 fluid changes were done 20k miles ago. was actually going do it sometime this month again. occasionally shudders during hard almost like I'm losing traction. Smelled like burnt fluid when I got home today, the car idle was starting to dip down at idle. Other than that it shifts fine. I noticed it today driving to work doing 70+ mph, all the lights just went on one after another. I cleared the faults with my phone, only to see them come back within a few minutes.

CEL and VSA might be related now for the SRS theres a simple reset that you can do with a jumper wire.

Also check this out it might help you with the transmission

This is transmission #3 btw, original owner changed tranny at 40k. I picked up the car at around 45k miles it slipped took another crap at 87k. I fortunately had it changed under my extended warranty. So yea this would be #4 if I decided to do so. Keep in mind I had this car since Sept 2005

How is the car other than your transmission problems? Is it reliable? Does it get good gas mileage? It's fairly easy to work on.

Personal note: Damn these transmissions they ruined an otherwise great car. My tranny went at 135,000 now have149,000 and can't complain. Rebuilt honda remanufactured $2500.00 installed plus 18 month warranty.

Do some more research on your problem try resetting again.

Hey Importvizion, the family addition will definitely be a gamechanger. Perhaps, working with your budget.....a newer "used" low mileage troublefree ride may be the ticket.

But, consider hanging on to your TL for a spare second car and find a shop to do the Accord tranny swap for ya. This will breath new life and value back into your otherwise worthless TL.

Drives fine, its still pretty heavy on gas I get about 280 miles per tank, I always fill up around the 10% mark. The car is fairly reliable, only stranded twice due to dead battery and busted radiator. In the last three months alone, my trunk switch broke. Which I've already replaced and the rear door lock actuator died on me and would no longer lock the door. I just switched that out two days ago.

That maybe an option, I just have to find a shop that will do that down here in so cal. I will ask my trusted mechanic if he is willing to do a honda v6 tranny swap. I've asked like 3 shops around my area they refuse to even try it.

Just come to a conclusion. The lights come on as soon as I go over 50mph. The engines idle rpm dipa very low and almost turns off at a stand still.

I had the same issue except the idle one , IMO the lock up system is not working most likely due to worn clutches that clogged the filters inside and maybe the upper one that can be changed. But at this point you might as well go for the av6 option if you don't like the other.

The P0740 code indicates a problem within the Lock-up Control System. Have the tranny's line pressure checked. Possibly worn clutches or bad convertor ? Maybe the lock-up solenoid set is clogged ? Probably a bad tranny, IDK ?

The low idle and stalling at low rpms should be investigated first. Perhaps try cleaning the IAC valve, TB intake and EGR passageways. These are common issues that could cause a low idle condition. Clear the codes and see what comes back.

I kept it under 70 on the way home the check engine didn't come back but then the transmission started to shift hard at low speeds 10-25mph.....this is becoming just like what happened during my last tranny failure... I bought 5 qts of honda ATF this morning. But, I'm not even sure about doing it now.

all you need is 3 to do a single drain and fill if you over filled it every time you changed the atf this could explain why your on a 2nd tranny, overfill is deadly. There was a member here once that revived his 99TL 4 speed by draining and refilling it correctly. But this is my assumption since you mentioned you bought 5 quarts unless it was typo and you meant 6.

I did buy 5 but that was only because thats how many I could hold at once. I did buy more last time and followed the put in how much you drained, then drive on the freeway to engage all gears then drain again.

Drain it and fill it with 3 quarts only nothing more or less although the damage is done already.
