P0420 and P1709 codes

My check engine light is on in my 99' TL so I went to Autozone to have them chekc it out and code P0420 and P1709 came back. I guess this is a two part question. Oh BTW I've searched the site for both of these issues and this tread is for clarification purposes.

P0420- Has anyone determined if the cat. convertor is the problem here? or is there a simple solution to correct this. Previous post say it could be the cat., O2 sensors or a variety of things. I'm just wondering has anyone narrowed down the cause and roughly how much is it to fix.

P1709- I've read that this is basically means the the side console needs cleaning on the inside. Is this correct and dows anyone have a how to to guide me along in this process. Your help would be greatly appreciated as always. THX!

a 420 could be a few things, have the vehicle scanned with a "scan tool" that can read live feeds to the computer, instead of just a "code reader" that only display's stored codes, you can then monitor the o2 sensors output live feed to the computer & you can then decide if both need to be replaced.

Most parts stores like Advance Auto, AutoZone, Have the Actron CP9145, which is capable of showing sensor live feeds.
So call around & see which store in your area has a scan tool that can display such.

The other way is to test the O2 sensors hot output voltage with an ohmmeter, but it's a pain when things war hot!!!!!

and any thing 17xx is tranny related. i dont have those codes.

I have the same problem on the 99 TL P0420 code, I plug in my snapon scanner and read the live data from the computer and show the 2nd O2 sensor reading was off. I plug in a second O2 sensor at the exhaust tip and I'm getting the same number.
After some research I found out that this is a know defact with all 99TL catalytic converter.
on November 21, 2003 Acura actually release note 03-027 to all Acura Service center.
Acura release a new redesign cat got all the 99TL.
Here's the Replacement cat parts number: for KA emissions (non cali)
OLD P/N 18160-P8C-305
New P/N 18182-P8A-A01

For KL emissions type(Cali)
OLD P/N 18160-P8F-J00
New P/N 18182-P8C-L00

As for warrenty all catalytic converters are covered by the 8years or 80,000 miles this is the federal and california regulation.

I replace my cat with a dynomax 3way ODBII highflow cat, is not a direct replacement, you need to custome pipe, but only cost me $300 installed and relocate my O2 sensor, where Acura want $600 just for the cat.
