Are our cars fast?
Are our cars extremely fast for what they are (FWD luxury sedan)? The reason I ask is because today on an open stretch of highway, a friend and I were driving to HBU. He drives a 2001 Mustang GT manual. His car is completly stock and mine just has the mods listed below on my sig and since then i got some headers. Anyways, Im cruising comfortably at 80 when he zooms right by me, he waits for me to catch up and we lined up head to head and floored it the same time, and i stayed with him neck to neck from 60 to 120! We were dead even. I know mustang GT's arent really blazing fast cars but still im totally impressed that my v6 fwd luxury four door was just as fast if not a bit faster. Does anyone feel the same way about these cars?

back in 2002 it was pretty fast for what it is..and I think 2001 Mustang GT also has 260hp, and they don't weigh much less. And there are other factors like you have headers, and your friend drives a stick, where skill is quite important.
Compared with today's sports sedans though, 14.8@96mph isn't all that fast anymore as there are a few that are 1 second faster and trap over 100mph easily. Even a Honda Accord V6 6MT can hit 13's stock, though rare.

Our cars used to be pretty quick compared to other everyday cars back in 02-03. Now Accords, Camrys, and Maximas are just as fast if not faster.
If they had made a 6-speed manual for this generation TL, they'd still be ahead of the bunch. About 20 more HP and the control of a manual. Then add ur cold air intake, headers, and pulleys for about another 30 horsepower gain. I wouldnt be surprised if you put down 250 to the wheels. That's a good number!

Isn't 0-60 for a 02-3 TL-S around 6.2 seconds? I still think that is a decent number, but I wouldn't call it fast... I don't think the 07-08 TL-S's are fast either. They are quick, but I wouldn't call them fast. Back in 2002, the TL-S was quick for its day.
Technology and performance will always advance. In today's world, you can buy a 268 horsepower Toyota Camry that goes 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. Does that tell you something? 260 horsepower is about normal for the everyday sedan. The new Mazda6 is now sporting a 270hp V6. The entry-level luxury sedans these days are around 300-340 horsepower. G35, 335i, TL, C350, A4 all have available engines that are 300hp and beyond.
I think my TL-S does good for its age. It definitely gets out of its own way, while getting 27mpg. I don't see the normal everyday sedan going over 260hp, so 2G TL-S' will probably remain "average."

My impression is that it is not all that quick 0-60 wise nowdays, and doesn't make a great "stoplight" racer, but it is very responsive and takes care of business pretty damn good at higher speeds.
It does have a very wonderful refined and tight feel, steers & rides great, I LOVE the feel of the torque sensistive steering on the TLS, and, for an automatic, I love the responsiveness of the transmission. It feels like a smaller, nimbler car than it actually is.

I have dead hookers in
to sum it up. it is respectable still but compared to newer models in the TLs class. No its not fast in its stock form
AND BTW if you wanna find out how quick your car is take it to a track. Racing on the streets is not cool
just noticed these last 3 posts were all Arkansas boys. sweet

I usually do go to the track but if so i dont take the tl there being we have other cars that are much more track worthy, such as a c6 zo6 which is now putting down 489rwhp, an 05 cl55amg, and a 312rwhp bmw 330i. I do plan on taking the tl to the track one day but im going to throw in some more mods before i track it.

That said, a 6.5-ish 0 - 60 is still pretty respectable in a daily driver sedan. There are still a bunch of sedans that can't break 7 seconds.
Also, keep in mind that the 2G 260 HP was under the old test methods. Under the new Test Specs the 2G TL-S rates at something like 10% - 20% less (225-ish, I'd *guess*). IOW - that new Camry or Mazda6 have a 10% - 20% rated HP advantage on the 2G.

6G TLX-S
The 2G TL/TL-S was once fast six/seven years ago. But by now all other new model cars have caught up with the horsepower, and some can even run away from the 2G TL/TL-S with ease.

Yeah I also agree, even today where it is average in performance, it still has the ballsy looks. You don't really get the "That's a woman's car" comments. (no offense to the ladies in here)

i would say the Acura TL is a very Fast Slow car.
or a very slow fast car.
it depends on how you look at it. You don't buy a TL to have all out performance.
unless your Accuratein

I agree. At the time any sedan getting mid 6's 0 - 60 was doing pretty well in it's class. But today, not so much - lots of "sport" sedans that get to 60 that fast.

Three Wheelin'
from a dead stop he'd likely beat you to 120.
Having driven a GT, I found that the highway pick up was less impressive than from a dead stop. Maybe it's the gearing, above 40 it seems less impressive.
His mustang should put out 302tq, and about 260hp. This torque should beat you off the line.

Even though our cars in stock form go 0-60 in 6.2 which is decent, My car feels like a beast at highway speeds, I easily overtake many cars. And besides our cars are
MODDED!!
With 13.7 pound Kosei wheels, and eibach pro kit, I've acheived 0 to 60 in 5.8 sec, and have hardly no engine mods. I think with some more engine mods like headers, crank pulley and a thermoblock spacer i could shave a lot of that.

When I first got the car, I was speeding like it was nothing...unintentionally though. It's like the shift point is right at 30mph and if I don't lighten my foot as soon as it shifts, I easily hit 40mph before I realize it. It feels much faster when I'm already moving versus when I'm stopped though.

i just did some research into what some said about today's family sedan's THAt some of you guys competes with TL and came up with following from yahoo car com.

I owned CRX 88 before getting my TL and comparison is as follows:
CRX advantage: fuel econ, handling, cost of owning, responsiveness, acceleration above 60mph.
TL advantage: comfort, technology, power, acceleration from dead stop.

I was sitting beside a Mustang GT at a red light not long ago. Prob. a 2000 model. young young kid driving it. He was gunning the engine at the stop light. I looked over, nodded my head and when the light turned green we both took off. I beat him hands down to the next light bout a mile down the road. He pulled up beside me and asked me what my car had in it? I smiled and said a stock engine and ME! I guess new plugs, good gas and someone using the sport shifter knowing the right shift points would have been a better answer.

thats sucks that happened... because they have a 14.8 1/4 mile
this is almost dead with the type S
considering this kid has the 99.. its more spaced out... but still believable..
he very well may have beat him.. and he mentioned the driver was young, probably inexperienced....
with light modding you can bring a 99 in the 15 flat area
lets not give the older GT's too much credit

. . . . sigh . . . it seems that the performance wars from the late 60s early 70s have been in play for some time. Just look at some of the numbers being pumped out these days.
While the TypeS was pretty quick in its day, it's being caught and passed . . . but we can make our cars faster and run with some of the big boys if you really want to

the 2nd gen TL was beyond its time. but the times have caught up and the newer TLs are failing to break the same barriers that the 2nd gen did. sure SHAWD is nice, but god. it just doesnt feel complete like our 2nd gens.
then again, i could be biased. maybe

Those older V8s is stock form werent that fast. My TL-P would beat them on the HWY. I would barely loose out to them at the 1/4 mainly due to them being able to launch better. The Type-s could take them just about every time.

No i dont consider our cars fast, they are quick and get up and go very well for the year. there is also allot more to look at then just hp/tq numbers. Power to weight ratio has a big part of it aswell. and as far as highway racing it depends on where you guys are in the powerband of the vehicles. our cars are better for spirited driving in the mountains than stop light racing. But it still puts a smile on my face when you take a ricer civic or prelude and you got 3 friends with you!
