Oil Leak!!!!!

today i was driving from New Orleans to Baton Rouge to my gf's house, so while i was there, someone needed to move thier car, so i had to move mine, and when i moved it, i noticed there was oil on the ground, not just a few drops either, it was a little puddle on the floor, i tried to look where the oil is coming from, but i'm not sure where. i checked the nut for the oil pan but it was kinda tight, i'm not totally sure b/c i just had surgery on my elbow so i really couldn't put much force into turning it anyways, but the whole bottom of the oil pan was wet with oil. any thoughts on what i should do?

maybe a oil pan gasket leak, if you need to drive it, keep your eye on the oil level very very often and get her on a lift or to the dealer to check it out. a finger tight check on a bolt for the engine isn't tight enough.

If you can jack it up and get under and try to wipe every thing clean to see where its coming from. Get a wrench and try to see if the oil plug is tight. OR maybe bring it to a quick lube and ask if they can see where its coming from.

thanks for the help, that's pretty much my plan though, i was going to drive to houston tom, but instead i'm going to a oil/lube place to see if they can tell me where it is, and if it's something minor like a loose nut then i'm going to drive, if not, i'll hold off to go to houston on saturday, so it can get fixed on friday..

Two things I would do before I go anywhere...

1 - Check the oil level
2 - Add as much as it needs (do not overfill)

Don't go too far without checking current levels - top it off as needed than take it for a ride. If the pan is completely wet - sounds like a gasket or oil drain plug... When was last time you had an oil change? Maybe someone didn't tighten things up...

i just came back from the oil/lube place and they told me that there's a small leak some where towards the back of my oil pan which would probably be the seal, but then he said that wasn't my main concern b/c there's a major leak from where the tranny meets the engine!!!????? i'm not sure if that's covered under the transmission warranty and acura told me they won't be able to schedule me in for an appointment till monday, but i have to be in houston for monday... so what do y'all think? should i rough it and make the trip to houston and have John Eagle acura take a look at it? anyone know's hows there service? you think they'll fix the leak, maybe even the tranny under the tranny warranty? i have 83k miles...

did you get the tranny replaced? if you did, your damn right they better fix that, if not, raise enough hell say maybe thats the begining for you needed a new tranny. but i don't understand how there is a leak from where the tranny and engine meet, no fluids exchange between the two. looks like you need a loaner car or get a rental.

yea, i'm on my 4th tranny.... so it's possible they didn't tighten it enough, but knowing the dealer they are going to say that it's b/c i probably hit something or make up some other excuse saying its my fault instead of replacing the tranny for me.... i'm tired of these problems, after i replace my tranny and put new tires on, i'm going to get a new car, and maybe give my car to my brother so he can have the headaches of crapped out tranny's after it hit's 100k miles..

That sounds like a rear main oil seal. People refer to it as the the $5 part that costs $500 to replace.

Even if your dealer did replace the tranny you have no grounds to go after them for the seal. It's covered by a housing that needs to be removed to even gain access to it.

Mine went rather suddenly on a highway trip to Tampa at about 20k miles. No leaking prior to that, but I stopped for gas and smelled the burnt oil.

Good luck!

Yep, sounds like the rear main seal which is between the trans and engine block. The part is cheap but the labor going into replacing it isn't. The whole trans needs to come down to replace that thing.

Good Luck! x2

dang i was hoping it wouldn't be something expensive.... well do y'all think it'll be a little less expensive to fix it while they are changing out my transmission ? or they are still going to rape me on the labor cost/hours....

Yes - it's certainly cheaper when they do the transmission. We basically charge for parts if we do a tranny and rear main (no labor).

The bulk of the work is removing the tranny.
