Oil change info
hey guys,
so I'm due for my third service on my TL-S and would prefer to put in some Mobil 1 racing synthetic oil, and replace my factory oil filter with the K&N. I called up Canadian tire, and they want the following
5 Litres of Mobil 1= $38.50
K&N Oil filter= $16.99
Labour= $25.00
Total w/ tax = 92.57 for everything
is it just me or is that not outrageous just for an oil change??? the price on the products seem reasonable, but the labour is ridiculous. They're not f*cking brain surgeons, they're car mechanics. Technically if I buy the oil and filter from them, they should charge next to nothing to install it.
Any other place in the Thornhill/Richmond Hill area I can go and have this done for less?
thanks

racing synthetic? you mean just regular 5w30 mobil 1 synnthetic? that seems high. you have a walmart in your neck of the woods? you can get a 5 quart jug for around 23 bucks from them, i would also get a mobil 1 filter (found in alot of parts stores) and then have your dealer change with your product
yah I went to CDN tire just now and they have the 4L bottle of Mobil 1 synthetic 5W30 oil for 25 bux. It's on sale. Quick question guys, is this oil the one ppl refer to as "racing oil" or is there something else???
How do I change the oil myself??? I'm just worried if something major happens with the engine (knock on wood) in the future, and Acura has nothing on file about oil changes, they may blame the problem on me not having oil changes on file, or me doing them myself, thus voiding my warranty.
what do you guys think??

Changing your own oil does not void your warranty (nor does taking it to some joe smoe garage). Just save your receipts for your purchases if it really bothers you. Acura would have to prove you were extremely negligent in changing your oil for you to have a problem.
There are various threads on changing your oil on these forums:
Basically,
(1) Warm the car by driving it.
(2) Remove the oil filler cap.
(3) Remove the drain plug and drain all oil.
(4) Clean around the drain plug hole with paper towel and clean the drain plug bolt and washer (remove all grit, sand, etc).
(5) Reinstall and tighten the drain plug bolt (until snug), no need for torque wrench. Use the existing drain plug washer; they say to change it every time but that is BS if you keep it clean before installing.
(6) Remove the filter.
(7) Pre-fill the new filter as much as possible. Oil the rubber O-Ring with your finger.
(8) Reinstall the filter until tight by-hand, then turn it another 1/2 turn with a tool.
(9) Fill oil and reinstall filler cap.
The 2000 TL capacity with new filter is 4.6 QTs. I make sure I add this amount between prefilling the filter and filling the oil pan.

we're going to be having a TL meet at the Woodbine Acura dealership, at this time I'm going to have them put the oil in for me so that I have proof (invoice) of it. Whatever, I'd rather not be messing around with something I don't know how to do. Even though it is easy to do, why not leave it up to the experts.

as far as changing it your self its easy. you wont void warrantys (unless you forget to add oil or something user related like that) you deffanitly dont need to have a dealer do it. they usually charge more than most other places. do it your self takes less than 40 min to do your self (beginner) all you need is a 17mm socket and socket wrench, a oil pan, a few rags to wipe things down and possibly a oil filter wrench(not necessary)

maybe one day. for now, I'll let the dealer do it for me.
on top of which, a buddy of mine works at markham acura, so he's having the oil put in for free...this time though I'm going to woodbine, too much of a hassle to markham.
after that though, I'm going to markham.

But in refenence to the Mobil 1 racing oil you mentioned... this is all hot news from Mobil. Its a new oil just released in the US.. so dont expect here for at least 1 year... heck we dont even have half of the M1 oil grade they sell.
So if they quoted you 38.50 for the oil, most likely it's the M1 SuperSyn (great oil..
). and that too expensive.J
