Angry Oil Change @ Jiffy Lube, they started the car without oil.

Okay, here in Canada it is too cold to change my own oil, and I did not have time to set up an appointment to go to the dealer.

So I go to the Jiffy Lube. The guy comes out to the waiting room and says my car is ready. He goes into my car and starts it up. I notice the oil cap is still off, and I say, did you put in the oil. He shuts the car off immediately, and puts the oil in immediately.

The car, 2002 TL, ran without oil for about 4 seconds.

I get them to write it it down on the receipt and will be sending a letter to their head office.

The car should be okay, but man, how fn stupid is that? Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Those guys at Jiffy Lube are clowns. I seriously don't think they're trained to work on cars, that's why I change my own oil, at least you know what your doing. I think if you write them a letter, all they will give you is a free oil change, but do you really want that?

No I don't, just want to place them on notice if there is any engine problems. BTW, I normally change my own oil in my driveway.

Truly a sad story, at least you got yours changed.

I was out of my hometown where I would normally change my own oil. I took it to Jiffy Lube and they ended up stripping the bolt of the plug and said they couldn't open it.

Talk about crash course training.

Once again... Never go to Jiffy Lube!

Those people are jiffy lube are about as knowledgable as a mentally handicapped person working on your car, lol. I think the car should be fine, I wouldn't worry about it much, I've seen cars run without oil for 25-30 miles without problems, not that I'd recommend it, but 4 seconds should be just fine.

Actually, I usually take my TL to Jiffy Lube. The guy that does it there has been at the same place for 15 years. I always put synthetic oil in the TL, and he always does an excellent job. Cost me $62 every time I do it, but I change it ever 6K, instead of 3K, so I'm actually just about breaking even. He said a guy with a 94 Ford Ranger got 450,000 miles on the same engine because he used synthetic every time. Is it that much better??? But yeah, the Jiffy Lube by my place does a fine job, and I always make sure I have the same guy do it.

PS At least I get to watch him do it a JL, cause at the dealer I just sit and wait in the lounge. I prefer to watch them do it cause it reassures me.

The dealership forgot to put the tranny fluid filler bolt back in, so I drove around for a couple thousand miles before I realized the bolt wasn't in and that I lost about half my tranny fluid. I had them write that on the receipt so that I have a valid claim if need be. The point is that it doesn't matter where you take it, everyone is human and mistakes happen.

Jiffy Lube

Never, Never, Never, Ever take you car to Jiffy Lube. A lot of people believe that all cars are the same. They are not. All oil filters don't fit a specific car. Believe me, I understand you didn't have time, or some times it can be expensive. But, believe me when I say, it is worth changing the oil yourself, using Acura/Honda genuine parts or having it done by a professional Acura/Honda dearlership. I have heard many, many horror stories about Jiffy Lube. I was there last weekend, becuase they have an automatic car wash. Because of all the snow in DC I had my car done, only becuase I didn't want the salt of the streets to remain on my car. I prefer to wash/wax my car myself. Well, anyway, I had to go inside the store to pay for the car wash, I was insulted that the Jiffy Lube attendent asked If I wanted my oil changed. I think not. I understand this is their business, but believe me its not worth the trouble.

How much does a change at the dealer cost? I always took the infiniti in to the dealer, and it was always about 35 bucks. I want to continue putting synthetic in, but can anyone give me an estimate of what it would cost at the dealer?

Thanks,
Ryan

Blexv6 - it's no worse than a cold start; I can't see any damage occurring. There's always a thin coating of oil on your mechanical parts. That's why they don't pre-pump oil before you start your engine. I wouldn't worry.

. . .

Don't do that. Changing the sythetic oil at 6K instead of 3K is ok, because the oil will last a lot longer than conventional oil before breaking down. But the oil filter will not last that long, because bits and junks will still clot up the filter. I think it is a good idea to change the filter at 3K intervals even if you change the synthetic at 6K.

the old oil made a protection to the engine in the block inside even it's drained out...don't worrie for 4 sec...

if the engine is brand new...um...that might be trouble...the oil usually takes some time to build up a protection form for the new engines...

These places are just not worth it when you consider my Acura dealer only charges $23 and washes the car also.

never ever ever ever go to JL

Last time i went there 4 years ago for a simple oil change on my beater '88 528 they talked me into a rear differential change. the idiots didn't replace the bolt and it seized. after a flat bed back to the place with my mechanic the finally admitted fault and replaced it. A major hassle. I can't emphasize how bad they are. It's like monkeys with bats working on your car.

Funny, the Jiffy Lube charged me $39.99, in cdn. funds, and Acura charges me $30.00 and they wash my car. You live and learn.

My Acura dealer charges $29.95 for an oil change that includes a check (and adjustment if necessary) of all fluids and multi-point underbody inspection.

Hey comet, read my post on F### Jiffy Lube, they did a lot more to my car than I asked them to. Found this out on Saturday when I went to do the sways and an oil change.
