Everyone who is in the IT field.. (and I do see many of you here) I am 21 and I am currently trying to get my foot in the door. I cannot afford school right now but I read all the time and have been into computers since comodore 64's! I still have mine by the way. I'm very knowledgeable about the field but don't quite have any real experience I can put on a resume. Anyway, I was just wondering how most of you got into the field. Did you attend a 4 year college..get certified..or just knew the right people?

I am an old rascal, age 54 and I am a certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist with 30 yrs. of putting folks to sleep and waking them up. I have owned corvettes, Z-28 Comaro, 5.0L Mustangs and I love to drive spirited cars. I love my new Tl-type-S (with 5K miles). I drive 60 mile roundtrip commute and when I go to work at 6am the interstate is like a racetrack! I enjoy driving 85-90mph just cruising.

I'm an MVS Systems Programmer for good ol' EDS. When I get a chance to code it's in either assembler or REXX (or when I'm really unlucky, COBOL).

I started my own company with 2 ex Lucent Sales people, man I don't like sales people

Anyway, we own a VAR/Services company. We focus mainly on Service Providers and Govt. So far, we've been in business for only 4 months now and knock on wood, things are looking great.
Oh, we focus mainly on Lucent, Cisco, Nortel, and Juniper. We do quite a bit of 802.11 crap (for those that don't know, it's the wireless stuff).

And Tonio, I believe it's all about who you know, but college degrees will pay off in the long run. I didn't finish school but got lucky along the way. When I was at Lucent, I was making good money, actually, I made more than my VP, due to commissions and crap. Due to market condidtions, it will be tough right now to get in and land a great job without either college or shit load of experience, unlike 3 to 4 years ago. Anyway, good luck!

Server side processing is the standard and Java has all the support to develop sophisticated n-tier systems. By contrast transaction environments like Microsoft's MTS are weak in performance, unstable and lacking in features like persistable distributed objects and session management. MTS weak in performance compared to JAVA? UNSTABLE? (By the way it's COM+ now) Java Stable? Cross platform Java is a total joke.

For scalability lessions go to http://www.tpc.org/tpcc/results/tpcc_perf_results.asp and check out what the transaction monitor is. See Java anywhere near the top? Notice that it's all COM+ at the top, even for IBMs DB2? Java is not scalable, not stable, not performant. 1/3 the performance for 2 X the Price per transaction is where it first shows up. By the way where is Sun on the TPC benchmarks? Windows 2000 Advanced Server clusters rule the TPC-C benchmarks.

You think .NET is a rip off of Java? .NET is language agnostic, is Java? Are you talking about the fact that one of the languages in .NET, C# has similar syntax to Java? Do you realize where Java got the syntax from in the first place?

Have you ever visited a site developed with JSP? It doesn't matter how much hardware you throw at it, it's a stone dog. By contrast ASP pages are substantially faster. (Gee I wonder if JSP were meant to be a blatant rip off of ASP) I did some Sun NetDynamics / Java development in my last job. Net Dnamics was an absolute joke. We finally split into two groups Microsoft and Java and did parallel development. It wasn't even close, before the Java boys got even partial functionality we were done and the applications were in production. Java boys quit (to make much more money though). IBM's WebSphere is coming along as a product but Sun is nowhere.

The gentleman who asked what real software is written in Java has a point. Ideally a Java based browser would be able to run on any platform (If you believe Sun). Where is the browser? Where is ANY successful commercial application written in Java? It works for web development because flaky and slow is what people expect on the internet.

On the plus side you'll be able to learn C# fairly easily. ;-)

Regards
-w

Those test results are all bogus. BEA Tuxedo results are from 1999 compared with Microsoft results from 2001. The hardware available in 1999 and 2001 are radically different. And Tuxedo is not even the one that needs to be tested. What kind of comparison is that? Where is BEA Weblogic Enterprise v6.0?

And how long were the tests performed, I'm sure that the Microsoft systems did not last past the 10 minute mark because after that the server went into a special mode called "Blue Screen of Death" :-)

Business/licensing attorney with a large software/internet company. In my prior life, I was a computer engineer...how's that for a career change! Now, software/ programming is just a hobby of mine.

Question: How many of you IT/programming guys actually enjoy your jobs? I've heard the field has changed (for the better) since I left it several years ago...in the new economy, the projects seem more challenging.
