OEM spoiler = better performance?
I was just curious, does our OEM spoiler actually add to any significant improvements/performance to the car or its just more for cosmetic/decorative purposes? It's so low that I don't see how it could do any good performance wise, but then again I might be wrong since I don't know much about that stuff. Correct if I am wrong please. :diablotin

only looks, and at higher speeds, it probably adds more drag

the concept of having a spoiler is having it shaped like an upside down airlplane wing. So the faster you go, its suppose to "push" your rear end closer to the ground giving you more control and better handling at high speeds (and more traction on RWD). If you think about it, cars are shaped like an airplane wing (curved on top and flat on bottom) so at high speeds, you car wants to lift off the ground. A spoiler should reduce that effect. But to answer your question ... our spoilers don't do anything but make your TL look sporty. The surface area under the spoiler is not enough to perform the intended function. The only car I think spoilers really belong on and serve a purpose is on a Supra (speaking average consumer cars of coarse).

The oem spoiler is hanging too low to function aerodynamically at any speed. It needs to be raised up to about the same height as the roof in order to start working at high speed.

definately a false statement. if you look at the fast supras (by fast i mean low 11's or 10's or better) they ditch the stock spoiler. it hurts their performance. my buddy has a 10.2 second supra and he dropped 3/4 of a second on his et just by putting a flat spoiler on the back. i mean he is pushing close to 900 hp. he should be in the 9's maybe even low 9's by the end of the summer because he just dropped another $8k on new shit. (btw, he got a nice inheritance so he is probably sucking that dry)
the stock spoiler actually holds the car back in performance because it adds drag. alot of people put on the TRD wing (which actually looks like the stock spoiler on the EVO 8) and that helps better too.
if its a daily driver that your gonna beat the piss out of then maybe the stock spoiler will help. but other than that the stock spoiler is for looks, lets face it. most people that bought the supra when they were in production will never take the car over 100 mph.
i personally think the supra looks wayyyy better without any wing at all. but thats my personaly opinion.

I got mine just for looks. I don't have the chance to drive fast enough to worry about drag. Actually, trunk spoilers are designed to increase the downforce on the rear of the car - helpful for powerful rear wheel and all wheel drive cars, but not very useful for front wheel drive cars like the TL. Still, it looks good.
