Odo area doesn't light sometimes

The rectangle window where the weather temp gauge and odo is doesn't light up sometimes. All the other lights on the dash stay on. When the car warms up, the window lights up. This happened a few times this past week when it dropped into the 30s. Haven't had this happen in the past when it was in the single digits. Car is 3 years old since I picked it up.

The only electrical thing I've played with is hardwiring the 8500 to the fuse panel on the driver side. I did that about 2 years ago and never had a problem with it. Otherwise the rest is all stock and untouched.

What's starting to go ?

Thanks Kris, I guess I actually have to open the service manual and see which wires lead to what.

have you tried changing the bulbs to troubleshoot it? it's not tough to do. i would recommend that first. i would say it sounds unlikely to be the issue but it's worth a try. the ODO bulbs are the wedge type IIRC so you should be able to pick those up at autozone/advanceauto/etc.

Thanks guyz

I've tried absolutly nothing but hard stares, sending mental "work...work" messages and the infamous finger tap.

How much effort is it to start pulling the dash apart ? Is it as easy as pulling the front bumper ?...more involved ?
