noob trans help question

OK so at some point when I start making money I need my 03 tl to haul ass. The carro project isn't in the works yet but when it is I want you guys to see every bit of it. That being said here is the question;
I need help finding a performance type trans. I see a lot of posts about the av6 and I've decided unless anyone says different im sticking to that. But more basic than that, how does one go about finding a trans at a yard or something? For real tho, none of those quick bs answers please.

If you're looking for a more sportier feel from your TL, you might want to convert it to a 6 speed manual.

As for finding a transmission, there are several sites that have them for sale, but if I were you I would simply call them up and ask if they have any 2006/2007 Accord V6 transmissions. Make sure you get the amount of miles too, you don't want to get one with too many miles.

What would be things to look out for? Are there any tell tale signs of a bad tranny (lol)?

I'm no expert, but a common problem with Honda 6 speeds of the era are grinding- I've heard the synchros can go bad. I know GSRs of late 90s (5 speed) all the way up to the 2006 RSXs can have this problem. I know people who have had good results using the GM Synchromesh fluid in the Honda transmissions. I'm unsure if the 2003 CL-S 6MT ever had this problem though seeming the integras and RSXs were I4s, and the CLs were V6s.

As for the Accord V6 transmissions from 06/07, I can honestly say I haven't heard much about them having any problems. That isn't to say they don't have any, but they don't suffer nearly the same fate as our TLs.

For our TL transmissions, they can fail pretty quickly. Common symptoms:

Slipping
Loss of reverse
Clunking into reverse
Hard downshifts
D5 light blinking

Sometimes before a transmission in our TLs are about to fail, you'll get a check engine light with the code P0740, which is the torque converter clutch solenoid circuit. In most cases, this is because clutch material has worn away and gotten clogged in the solenoid screen. The most important thing to do is to keep an eye on your fluid level and condition. It should be a nice red and not smell burnt. If it's dark, you should probably change it. If it smells burnt, you have a bigger problem to deal with. As far as when to change it, it is common practice to do it every 30,000 miles.

Other codes commonly associated with this transmission failing are:

P0730 - Incorrect gear ratio
P1750 - mechanical fault in hydraulic system

Here are some threads you might want to look at if you haven't already:

6 Speed swap - https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/6-speed-conversion-591872/

Accord V6 - https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/06-07-accord-trans-swap-858165/

Most of the time professional sites won't sell a bad transmission on purpose. If they do, it's rare and happens by mistake. While I can't speak for all, I'd say more than most junk yards will mark on the car itself (usually on the windshield of somewhere similar) that the transmission / engine is bad. If you're in doubt, or want to double check, just ask.

I can't add anything more to what Yikes said except;

In my old transmission
Clunking into reverse. Yes.
Hard downshift. Yes.
D5 blinking. Yes.
P0740 code. Yes.
Junky Tl transmission Yes.

Note: Not everybody has had a bad transmission, but if you need a newer one get a tranny that will last and as far as a performance transmiasion is concerned not sure what you mean. The TL is a luxury car with a pretty nice engine.

You DONT want to use that fluid. You want to use the GM Syncromesh FRICTION Modified part# 88900399 (and remember this is ONLY for the manual trans)

That is 110% true. I forgot to say the friction modified. Thanks for the reminder.

Hey DaBubbla, no bs about it.....go find a CL"S" 6 speed tranny for the best overall performance out of a tranny and your TL.

Other than that, you're going to have to settle for the Accord V6 AT for basic durability purposes. Call around your local salvage yards.....most of them are connected to a network to get ya whatever your heart so desires.

If the present tranny is still ok, run it until it blows and save up your money for the swap !!! In the meantime, get everything else all up to snuff. Check out the "DIY"s and Performance sub-forum for ideas.

car-part.com is a good place to start your search. Also you should search for junk yards in your area and make some calls. I'm sure they have some 06/07 V6 accords there.

I don't 100% agree. Both are great transmissions. Converting your car to a 6 speed is more work because you have to add the clutch pedal, and change the console to include a shifter, hand brake, and cup holder among other things.

Manual transmissions are considered to have more of a sporty feel when you drive them, but I wouldn't say it's better or worse than the Accord transmission.

The Accord transmission is a better alternative for the automatic transmissions in our TLs, but the CL-S 6MT transmission will, without a doubt, give you the more sporty feel. It all depends on what you're looking for from your car.

The 6 speed is a HELL of a lot better than the accord/tl trans. It takes away less HP, You never have to worry about reliability, its more engaging, and best of all it has a great LSD.

Back with another question. Everyone says av6, that's cool I'm looking them up. I'm seeing an auto trans for the 06-07 accord, it is the 3.0 right? I'm on car-part.com now

I'm just new to searching car-part.com (or any parts) I'm staring at the 07 accord 3.0 sedan tranny... not sure that there is a difference considering it brings up the same tranny when I search coupe.

What should I look for when it comes to high stall torque convertors? Remember for now we just want a little more power since this is still the everyday lady.

High stall converter in a everyday traffic I don't think thats a good idea, If its performance then 6 speed all the way.

It doesn't matter between coupe or sedan, as long as it is a V6 and not an I4. Also car-part.com is a good place to start, but from what I've seen they can be a bit pricey. Some lucky users on the forum were able to pick up an AV6 tranny with low miles for cheap. Not sure if they found it on the site or were able to pick one up from their local scrap yards, but calling your local scrap yards are definitely worth the phone call. You can't lose.

Ya probably can get a better price than that if ya look enough. Make sure that the delivery freight charges are figured in.
Also, ya may wanna line up an installer if you're not doing the swap yourself. Have the tranny delivered to the shop.....to save some hassle.

The trannys I looked at are really close so I could just run down with my brother and the truck to pick it up. I'd put it in myself, with his help of course. What of the torque convertor? I'd like to find a high stall tc. I haven't had much luck finding those...

The torque converter you want by default is the one that is paired with the AV6 tranny. You don't want to use the TL's.
