Noise when accelerating

I recently just bought a used 03 Acura TL-S (62k) and I had a couple of questions. When I accelerate the car makes a whining noise. It almost sounds like a supercharger. Any ideas of what it could be? Is it normal?

Also my car is not covered under the transmission warranty. Why? Did Acura do something different with the trannys in the 03s. Do problems still occur?

Thanks guys

Are you sure it's not a hum from the wheel bearing?

Yea it sounds a little like that. It comes in when I push down on the gas. I noticed when I tap the gas to maintain speed the noise doesn't come in.

I got the same problem. I find the whistle/hum noise to be more pronounced while turning and accelerating but i dont hear it when i eccelerate while im already going a decent speed.

You can double check your VIN here for Transmission coverage under recall and extended warranty. If covered it applies to ALL owners of the vehicle.

I don't think it's the transmission. My car made the noise before and after I got my replacement transmission. It only does it at certain speeds when you lightly accelerate.

I asked this exact question in another forum because my 01 TL has the same exact "supercharger" like whine when I accelerate, and I was told that the culprit is the timing belt getting old, but I never looked further into it, I thought it was the VTEC too :-p.

vtec engages at 4700 rpm- is that where your noise starts?

Removing the lower intake resonator box may help too- it has a lot of restriction to it!

No its when accelerating from a stop, to about like 2500 rpm, so I know its not the VTEC, I was planning on taking out the resonator anyway, I'll do it and tell you what happens. I still think that the timing belt needs to be replaced.

Other thoughts maybe check for airbox leaks. It depends, but whinning could also come from tranny. You can find the whinning sound problems with many newer honda models such as accord, odyssey, etc. My brand new 05 accord tranny is whinning when accelerating; it is bothersome, and definitely not from the sound system.

The trans noise that acutee describes is typically planetary gear whine, and sometimes subtle enough that a cai would drown it out. It will usually change pitch slightly with each gear change and disappear as road noise takes over at high speed.

I know exactly what ur talking about and I'm pretty sure its normal. Especially if almost everyone has it in their car. The vtec is that crazy noise you hear when you floor it.

I don't think that i have that noise. If it is the intake, you could try opening the throttle by hand under the hood and listening to the intake. Revving the engine without load sometimes doesn't give the same results. You also may not notice it with your head by the engine because the engine will drown it out. Worth a shot though!

After searching on google it seems like it might have to do with the ground on the radio but i havent touched my stock radio ever so i guess maybe it somehow got loose? Guess i'll have to dig around and see how all the wires are looking to see if something is loose

It's the TL-S's Supercharger. Everyone knows that Type-S stands for Supercharged! Duh...

My TL-S has done this since I first bought it. I have had the timing belt replaced and it still does it. So it is not the timing belt. I don't think it is the sound system because it still does it even if you turn it off.

When I got my TL-S, way back when, I kept looking for a supercharger or turbo or something because of the sound. I always thought it had something to do with the "high-performance" intake system.

Personally, I kind of enjoy the sound. Mine does it when accelerating slowly, so it has a corporate-jet-like sound. When you give it alot of gas, VTEC sounds sweet. So, whether accelerating slow or fast, it sounds good.

I had that noise since the day i bought my car (8/01). its a whining sound when your accelerating or on the gas cruising at a low speed. I had that sound with my original trans, then that trans blew, Acura put trans #2-no sound, that also went, Trans#3-the sound is back.

Just a guess, but i think its the differential in the trans, where the play it adjusted too tight. (remember- fwd cars= trans and diff all in one)
