Newbie questions

Hi all,

OK, got a couple n00b questions here . When I punch the accelerator while going about 35 to 45 mph, my car accelerates slower than if I punched the accelerator at 20 mph, anyone know why this is? Also, can someone explain to me how and when the V-tec kicks in? I tried doing a search on this subject but came up with the phone book, and none of the posts broke the actual purpose and proper use of the V-tec engine down. Thanks in advance!

The reason it accelerates slower is probably b/c the RPMs are lower or you're in an overdrive gear.

When you're going 35-45mph you're probably in 4th, possibly 5th gear. When you're going 20mph, you're either in 2nd or 3rd gear, which are the best gears for accelerating. 4th and 5th are overdrive gears. This is why using SS is good b/c you can be going 40mph in 4th gear, downshift to 3rd, then accelerate to 80mph in seconds.... it's a beautiful thing.

As for VTEC... enjoy... :

Oh, but try not to hit it too much before 1000 miles. BTW.. it kicks in at 4800rpm.

Thanks for clearing up my confusion, junior. As for Sam, no, I'm not a new driver. I don't know anything about gears, the TL's SS, or V-tec, that's why I'm asking about it. As I have a new car, I decided it's time for me to learn the basics about them.

No problem. I know it's kinda weird to see someone with a nice car like a TL-S who doesn't yet know why 2nd is different from 4th, but that's why I'm coming here to ask. I feel embarrassed owning my car and not knowing how the whole thing works .

Thanks all. Anyhow, it's good to know how SS plays a part in my car. I used to just switch in an out between SS and auto just to see the difference, and I really couldn't . Anyhow, I have yet another question. When it comes to a street race, like if you were stopped at a light, how exactly would you go about toasting the other car? For now, all I've been doing is flooring the accelerator while in auto. I've heard that the car automatically drops down to third when you floor it, but would it be better to start in SS?

Actually many people have reported that the auto shifts pretty well on it's own. Personally I like to use sport-shift and take the RPMs to almost redline. You have to remember that there's a slight delay between when you shift and the car actually does it....but once you're used to it you shouldn't have any problems....
