Post Newbie needs advice from TL experts...

In a nutshell, I'm seriously considering going for a 2001 TL now that they're selling for about invoice here in the NY/CT area. I currently have a 2000 Passat... GREAT car... but the service is the worst in the business.... as is the warranty and VW has lost all my respect. It's a shame... it's the greatest car I've ever owned in terms of fun factor but the dealer service is beyond reproach.

I owned Accords up until the VW so I have not question about Acura/Honda reliability and from all accounts, dealer service seems to be top notch. Example: In Scarsdale, NY you can get a 2001 TL non-nav for $26,500 BEFORE haggling.... they're also willing to include lifetime free oil changes and free loaner cars. Why not wait for the 2002's coming in a couple of weeks? Well, honestly, they are NOT going to discount them AT ALL until the 2001's are "outta-here". I checked the inventories at a number of local dealers and they have 25-50 average sitting on the lots. So I could pay $26k for a 2001 or $29k for a 2002. Also, front-end on the 2002 is nicer, but not THAT much nicer. The tail lights are nicer but I could BUY those on my own online. Sure, I'll get a 1-disc vs. 6-disc unit but I have an in-dash AND Trunk 6-changer now and rarely use either... I'm a radio guy myself. so, I wouldn't be gaining much and I could use the extra $$ for mods and to help cushion the loss I'll take on dumping the VW.

I'm going to test drive one for the first time tomorrow and would appreciate any advice you could give regarding what to look for, good dealer experiences in the Westchester/Fairfield area, and even salesperson referals. Also, some questions: First, is it true the rear seat doesn't fold down? Also, my experience lately with late-model hondas is that the seats are too-far reclined in the most upright position... is that the case with the TL? Is the interior quiet.... the Passat is LOUD with quite a few rattles and it drives me nuts! Finally, what DON'T you like about your car (honestly)? Did any of you consider the Passat first... if so, what made you go Acura? Do any of you regret not getting the DVD navigation? Thanks Guys!!! Nice to meet you all! Wish me luck, and I look forward to reading your replies!

1) Yes, rear seat does not fold down as most luxury cars dont.

2) Seats are somewhat awkward. Takes time to get use to them. Not as comfortable as they should be.

3) Car is quiet as hell. Only sunroof and seat rattles which are easily fixed.

4) No nav in Canada. Otherwise its a good option.

5) Passat not as good looking compared to TL IMO. Did not even consider trying Passat though.

Good luck.

Hey, another Westchester/Fairfield member!
Welcome.

If you can get a 2001 w/NAV for under $29,000
take it, run out the door and never look back.

Or, buy my 1999 and I'll run out the door and never look back.

Try to get some extras for free. Wheel locks, oil changes, maybe even mud guards.

The 2002 will be non-negotiable and run you about $4,000 more apples to apples.(Except for the noticeable upgrades)

Let us know what happens.
