New York City tinting laws

Hi Guys, Im not sure if this was ever brought up, but I have a question regarding tints.

I just got pulled over and received a citation saying my tints are too dark.

The officer checked my windows and said my front tints are @ 38% and my rear windows are at 19%. I always thought 35% or higher was legal and the rear windows did not matter at all.

He argued that I must let in 70% light. Anyway, this doesn't make too much sense to me. Since my tints are 38%, how much light am i letting in? Is the cop just being an asshole? It has been 4 years with the tints and I never got pulled over until today. I know the City needs money, but they shouldn't be pulling ppl over for every little thing, its so annoying....

38%is illegal. 70% is legal.

i hope you didnt get pulled over for the tint......thats against the law!
the cop can only give you a ticket for the tint if he pulled you over for
something else and got you for the tint while at it. i have 20% all around
and %50 on the windshield. i paid one ticket today and still have one more to pay.
believe me, this is something i should know about

I am pretty sure I've recently read that NY/NYC changed the law and made tint a primary offense, meaning they can stop you for tint only. I might be wrong on this, but seem sure I've read it in the past week or so.

Also, it does vary by state, so whatever they do in NY might be different for people elsewhere.

factory tint is 94% (light let in)
my tint is 20% (light let in)

When the cop measures your window, you have to account for the two tint numbers (factory and film)...so, my 20% window tint actually reads out at 14%

When i was in Minnesota, you can only have 50%....in Colorado, they really don't seem to care unless you are 5% all around, but usually only state troopers mess with folks from what i hear..maybe NYC has some tighter rules on that

Damn...I wish they would leave the tint alone! Some people shouldn't have it because they can't drive and they would probably hit pedestrians...nothin cool about that...having tint on a car does make a big difference though...good luck man

NYC is really cracking down on all tints since a po was killed a while back. Guys in a tinted BMW shot hime during a stop. I don't blame them for their safety, but if you drive by the local Precincts, their personal cars have the darkest tints!
