New Transmission = Better MPG???

Our 2002 TL/S just got its first new tranny @ 43,000 miles. On the second fillup I noticed that we went about 50 miles farther on a full tank of gas (310 -vs- 360 miles) than with the original transmission. The performance of the car seems pretty much the same, but this difference per tank would equate to about 3 miles per gallon better gas mileage. Has anyone else noticed this?
