New TL Owner
Hi everyone i never thought i would own a TL but here i am.
To start i was given this car last Thursday aug 9. My father had just bought 2011 TL so he deciede to give me his car 99 tl, since i was in the market looking for a car. The car has 296,000 miles on it and runs strong. we are the original owners so i know the car has been very well taken care of all standard maintenance and we have never had a problem with it.
Now here's where i am stuck my last car was a 98 eclipse gs-t very heavily modified 415 hp
i was looking to mod this TL but is it worth it
mods considering
full rebuild to handle 7 to 10 psi on a supercharger
6 speed swap
as a dd also
is this car worth it to do this to
i am not after a monster just after a nice sleeper

at 300 these engines. when well cared for as yours was,,are barely broken in!
our mega moderator did a teardown on his 00 with 200kmiles
cylinder walls had honing marks !!! like new!!!
as long as compression is good and even, run seafoam thru gas and clean TB air plate
replace spark plugs and enjoy the car
no reason to abuse a 99,,,while the 4 speed is reliable it was never meant for high hp
You may have egr clogging- diy needed every 75kmiles and its not in any schedule
save all the modding money for your next car
the TL is a nice DD with a few mods like lower crossframe bar, good brakes,
and new HID parts and bulbs in front,,they are DUE BASED ON AGE
www.hidextra.com the 59$ kit is all we need, get 5k bulbs

What happened to the Eclipse ? That car was a light sports car, compared to the heavier TL sedan. You could do some minor mods, but it'll never be the same as your old Eclipse. At close to 300k, I'd just run it as it is and save up your money for your next passion. Maybe a WRX or a V-8 Mustang GT ! My 2 cents.

well the eclipse and i had a bad relationship. no matter how much i loved here she loved to get me noticed by the cops in no way was that car a sleeper hell i modded the outside just as much as the engine. now i loved my baby but all good things come to a end. it was time to grow up and no long have a High school kids car. i sold it to my cousin who is 18. he wont kill himself its going to be his track car.
if i hadnt been given the tl i was looking at getting a STI wagon or the Evo or the new brz and turn it into a brz sti basically
thats why i put the question the the forum is this engine worth modding or just turn this into my dd as save up since i didnt have to buy a car i still have all the money saved
so keep saving or turn this car into a sleeper i am stuck

^the one thing we know, is that the engine is good.
so, you wont need to re-build it.
unless, it lost compression, has bent valves, etc....
there is no reason to rebuild it.
Like i said earlier, the tranny is the weak link.
if you decide to throw some power at it, you'll need to beef up the tranny or do the 6mt swap.

DO make it your DD with a few stealthy mods so it corners brakes etc better than stock
our megamod now has well over 450,000 miles on the 00
swapped in a cls motor and 6 speed at 200,the removed engine was perfect condition, just not a type S

I drove close to 1500 miles, I left 2am monday and came home around 330am this morning from florida to Boston my body feels num . I must say this car is amazing how it drives, very fast.
Thanks for having me in your group. Cheers

If his miles were on the highway running in the engines sweetspot its fine. Thats indeed why the motor feels strong. Look, if you wanna mod it a little (headers-25hp, intake-12hp, & Exhaust-10hp), that should be fine. Leave the rest to body bracing and anti-roll bars and it'll be a nice dd with out straining the car.

the miles were all highway 125 miles a day 5 days a week and he babied the hell out of it one thing i am noticing is there is a small jerk when it shifts gears and a little noise when its in drive when i put in Neutral and rev the engine sounds perfect so i know its a thing int trans any idea but all gears work fine

take care of the trans NOW,,, or it will just be a car on the roadside with good tunes
try swapping out the fluid for new formula-DW-1- used by honda- it retros back to all older models
Many here report smoother shifts once on it
cleaning the pressure/shift external selenoids helps too
replace the external filter

296k miles is amazing for a TL. I would get it to 300k and sent the letter with pictures to Acura telling them about the history of the car and how you kept it in the family. I know that Saab and Honda bought and displayed some of their high mileage cars, while providing owners with new ones free of charge.
Regarding the transmission. DW-1 does seem to work great on our transmissions. I changed my fluid twice after a complete transmission failure; it shifts very smooth afterwards. So far 175 miles after the loss of 1,3,4,5 and Reverse.
