Picked up a low mileage 2000 TL for $2500. It wasn’t pretty with the fading paint, multi color dash, fogged lights and corroded wheels but for that price and only 70k miles
I couldn’t pass it up. Was gonna use it for my winter beater but I’m really liking the thing so I got a cheap paint job, cleaned it up and plan on doing a few other improvements.
Wow! That cheap paint job really did the trick. And at 70k, it's basically brand new! Congrats and welcome to the club
Thanks! The paint job definitely was a “get what you pay for deal” but I can do some corrections on my own. Definitely a 15 feet job. The main think is that it’s now presentable, lol.
Now I have to address the wheels in a similar economical fashion unless someone has a set to toss my way!
Outstanding! Two questions:
>>What was the ballpark for your paint job? I've considered a paint job for my '00 TL, though it has only a small bit of clearcoat failure on the passenger side.
>>What product did you use to restore your headlights? I bought the 3M kit but haven't used it yet...

The paint was $1000 including repairing both bumpers. Again, it’s not the greatest job but I plan on rubbing it out next spring. I also touched up the black trim parts with rattle can. Right now the faded dashboard airbag cover bugs me a lot more than the paint. I’m now looking at how to deal with the wheels in a cost efficient manner.
if it’s only a small part that’s gone bad, you might want to consider just fixing that part. Mine was really gone to far for a touch up.
I bought the 3M kit but I “improved” on the kit by using my own sandpaper in various stages in addition to the kit contents. I started with 330, then 400, then the kit’s 500. I also used 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 before I went back to the kit.
The wheels were bugging the hell out of me so I just went and bought a cheap set. Thought about having the old ones refinished but that was more expensive than just getting new wheels.
For now, I’ll just drive and enjoy it unless someone offers me a decent price.
Decided to do a few more things to the TL. I got new Infinity speakers from a great Black Friday deal, $100 marked down to $50, in the front doors which was relatively easy and straightforward other than the weird 5 1/4 size. Honestly the old speakers were in good shape to be 20 years old but I think the new ones sound better than the old Bose.
Next I turned my attention to the wheels. The old ones were in really bad shape from corrosion and it was cheaper to buy new ones than have the old ones refinished. I ended up buying a set of Pulse wheels from a local place (Belle Tires) for less than $500 out the door, again on a Black Friday special. I wanted the wheels to look as stock as possible so I picked up a set of Acura emblem off Amazon for $15 and they fit perfectly and look great.
I did have a misfire on the painted slim spoiler I bought off eBay. The color match was way off and the spoiler really didn’t add anything to the appearance, in fact it looked kind of silly. Either get the copy of the stock spoiler and have it painted or skip the idea.
