i found a welder guy, here in Bayonne.
and an auto place nearby that said they take off the lower part of the headeras and give to this welder person.

the welder guy does not have stainless steel.
i have to find some stainless steel.

Can some tell me the outside diameter of that front pipe, where the front flex is inline?.

 

would it be better to bring the headers to the shop, or install the headers then bring the car to the shop for this?

 

i'd imagine having it on the car would be easier. Since they and you would not have to worry about it not being aligned when you install it.

 

I think ill be better to put those on the car first since the piping will be at the right place so ill be welded using the correct angle

 

I think im the guy that you are talking about that got the streight pipe done and it did not work. I dont remember if it was that much louder without the streigh pipe but I still hear the hisss but i guess its not as loud and between 2-3k rpm under quick accelration. You think that I have a leak somewhere else? I dont think it would make that kind of hissing noise if I had a leak somewhere else though would it? The resonance problem I have w/ Megan headers is a sound that's like a weedwhacker hitting a chain-link fence. I think most people have this problem. I hear no hissing at all with my headers.

 

um, well i think the hissing is the same thing but we all just interpret it differently, but if you really hear something bad maybe you should check all the bolts and the heat shield on your cat if you haven't allready.

does your downpipe have enough clearance from your oil pan, etc.?

I had one of the earliest sets of Megans... All the bolts n stuff are tightened correctly. I don't have the heatshield on my cat anymore, took it off a while back cuz it was making noise.

The downpipe originally contacted the oil pan, but Megan sent me another one that did. However, if i remember correctly, the original downpipe didn't have that extra flexpipe... I could be wrong though. While I'm sure this new fix would take care of the resonance most people are experiencing, I'm not so sure it'd work for me since I have the first batch?

 

haha hell yeah...golden auto on 6th and folsom is the shit. if you live in the SF bay area i highly recommend them....the dude who runs the spot is real cool and the prices are pretty legit. Mach III outsources most of their muffler work to these guys too.....


if you have megans it doesnt hurt to do this. 100% sure the flex pipe is already leaking and causing some resonance so get this done. its worth the try.....it totally solved my resonance problems

 

Went to Midas this past weekend, and they refused to do this for me. The mechanic there said that eventually something along the exhaust system would crack from the lack of the flex pipe. He stood by this even after I pointed out the OEM downpipe has only 1 flexpipe, as well as all other aftermarket designs.

What he said did scare me though... anyone have any thoughts on this? Do you think this could cause some trouble a year or two down the line?

 

it doesn't concern me. many other header designs use 1 flexpipe and you don't hear about them cracking in half because of it. whereabouts in NY are you? you might need to just make a trip out of town to get it done.

1) actually no, they did not have stainless on hand so they used regular exhaust piping. i'm ok with that though. if it ever falls/rusts out i'll have SS welded in or learn to do it myself.

2) i don't know the size offhand but i'll measure it for you. i can tell you it looks about 1/2 and inch bigger in diameter than the megan piping is.

3) Fishkill Tire on Route 52 in Fishkill, NY. right off I-84. if you're coming from Jersey you could come up 17N to 87N to the exit for 84 then take it west for 10 minutes and cross the newburgh-beacon bridge and it's more or less another 5 minutes from there. if you're interested i can give you more explicit directions, just let me know.
