Question New Key for my 2002 TL

Hey guys,

I love this site and just bought a 1 yr old TL TypeS. I have to say this car is awesome to drive and I'm reading the information on this site as fast as I can...... but I do have one question. When I got my car last month, I was only given 1 remote and 1 key. I notice on Ebay there is an auction for aftermarket "blank" key with transponder(Item number: 2424235575). What exactly does this mean? Do I need to get it program by dealership even after the key been duplicated by locksmith??? What's the best way to get another key, from dealership or aftermarket....

What about remote??? I found a 3 buttom remote without trunk release (I think it's from MDX, Item number: 2424440071 ). Will this work for 2002 TL-S??? Your inputs are greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

If I recall correctly the transmitter has to be the one specificly for the '02-'03 TL for it to work.

The key has a chip in it. It will need to be programmed to your car. The remote will also need to be programmed.

I don't recall if the instructions are in the manual. Try a search on this site for the instructions as they have probably been posted.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome. Remember this "The search is your friend"

The key has to be programmed by dealer (I had to pay $40). Remote programming instructions have been posted here, do a search. When you buy a remote, make sure FCC ID is the same as your existing remote.

yeah gotta check that FCC id... but it shouldent be a big deal, just get the key and remote, take it to the dealer you got it from and they will probably program them for free since they kinda screwed you out of a set...

Thanks guys. I didn't realize the FCC id need to be matched. No wonder I couldnt' get the other remote to work with my TL-S.

that's chip you guys are talking about in the key, i'm guessing that's only for the TL-S or is my 2k TL included?
by the way, my insurance asked me if i had a TL or TL plus, anyone know the difference?

the chip is in the 2k tl also. that;s why when you start your car, the key icon in the gauge cluster blinks green.

I was in the same boat with my '99. Don't waste your time with the ones on eBay. I got one master and one valet key from my local dealer for $22/each and the master has the red A on it. The bad part was they clipped me for cutting and programing. I did get a couple of transmitters from eBay and they work just fine.

I think they are asking if it is a regular TL or a TL-S. I would expect the S is going to be more to insure.

Yeah, it's call Immobilizer System. If I were you, I would just bring my car & key to the dealer & buy them from the dealer.

You are one lucky guy. Dealer quoted me $45 for the key + $40 to cut and program. So I got it from Ebay for $25, saved myself almost $20 (shipping was like $2).

I just got a key made for my 02 TL-S and the dealer charged me $45 total (key + cutting + programing). My new key has a white A not red! They said they were all white and they had no red. My original key is all black.
