New Guy..Question for those with in dash TV

Hello to all...

I'm new here and a new owner of 2003 Acura TL Type S-Aegean Blue from New Jersey

I was interested in getting an in dash tv/dvd player and I was checking out the thread with everyones set up, which all look good!

The main question I have is do any of the TV's have a setting or default that will NOT allow you to watch the monitor while the car is in motion? I called panasonic and they said there is a default that will not allow you to watch when you are driving.

Are all tvs like that? If so, is there a way around that?

Is anyones tv like that on this board?

What brand of TV WILL allow you to watch the tv while the car is in motion?

Also, anyone know of where I can get a kit for the setup?

Thank you for all your help and cant wait to meet many more Acura owners!

Welcome, to begin its not safe to watch tv while driving. With that clear if you have decent attention span and can concentrate while the tv is on for you passengers, then you have choices. The indash tv all do not allow the tv to operate while the car is in motion. This is so they can avoid lawsuits on their parts. Yet there are ways to bypass this feature. I think the best option is the Pioneer Avic-D3 which is a tv/radio/navi all in one unit. It can be bypassed; look at www.avic411.com to see how.

You will also need a custom install kit to make the tv fit into the dash. Since no one manufactures one you can get a custome one done by a vender on the forum, or try to prepare one by yourself there is a diy on this. just do a search.

There are also others that can be bypassed like the pioneer n2, eclipse, kenwood, ect its just that some are harder than others. Good luck

Thanks for the response...I was more interested in the tv for my passenger who are always in the car and for myself when I am not driving. I just think having the TV without being able to use it while driving is pointless in my opinion and boring.

What about the new JVC AVX 800?

Anyone you know on the forum can do the custom kit?

It is very dangerous to have the TV going while you're driving. Especially Girls Gone Wild or something else of that nature (trust me)

I have the Jensen VM-9311TS 7" flipout w/ DVD and iPod hook ups. It, along with many others, will make you run a wire to the parking brake so you have to have it engaged (and do a special sequence on-off-on) to be able to watch video. A way around this is to wire the parking brake wire from the headunit to a switch, so that the headunit thinks you have the e-brake on when you flip the switch. Another way to do it is do the sequence with the parking brake loose and just ground it, so it thinks the brake is always on from then on.

I did a search on my headunit when I first got it and found another forum where they had a code you can enter in the menu to disable the parking brake sequence. I'm not sure what other in dash players out there will do that.

Another option is to go for a carputer

Get the Alpine IVA-W200 with the PAC TR-7 bypass from Ebay..no problems. I have enough self control to not watch TV while I drive, I let others look at it. I'll check it out while stopped at a light or something, but never while in motion...even using factory NAVI is tough while driving...no hands free like 04+ TLs....

I appreciate all the feedback from everyone...Anyone near jersey that is good with installs?

HOw much more money is the install of a regular DVD/TV compared to the DVD/tv/navi system?

Once again, if you or know someone that is good with installs near jersey..please let me know and anyone know a name of a person on the boards that can get custom kits for my model car?
