New to this board...00 TL
Hey everyone,
I am new to this board, but not to forums. I just picked up a STEAL on a 2000 Acura TL with 130k. I am the 3rd owner, the car has everything but navi (leather, roof, dual power seats, HID's etc) (I am sure most of that was standard) and is black/black. The best part is it runs like a top, has a 9/10 for interior and exterior. Okay, that isn't the best part, I bought it for $2,000. I look forward to learning more about these cars!

Thanks for the welcome...I will get it nice and clean and take some pics. Honestly, I don't think the guy knew what he had. He has a side business of taking wrecked cars and fixing them (no, this wasn't wrecked...clean title and carfax) and he had a vehicle that this older couple was interested in, and the only way they could afford to get into it, is to trade this Acura. He gave them 1800 bucks for it, and seeing as he only deals with chevy/ford/dodge, he had no use for it and wanted his money back out quick.

Also, where online is a good store with performance parts?
What else do I need to know about the car and typical issues?

I am reading as much as I can...sucks to have to filter through so much. Can you give me a brief insight into the typical tranny problems? This one shifts perfectly and the car runs out amazingly well. I just did seafoam in the tank, and I am going to do it in the intake this week. I need to find out about the timing belt...as well

And you got a great deal on your TL.
On the transmission, the second generation TLs have serious transmission reliability issues.
Spend some time reading the Tranny Failure Thread for more background:
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-problems-fixes-117/tranny-failure-thread-566833/
Acura did offer a 7 year 9 month, 109,000 mile extended warranty on the transmission but your TL is no longer covered by that.
Also, Acura has offered some out-of-warranty TL owners goodwill coverage on transmission repairs. So look into that if your transmission develops problems.
You should also check with Acura to see if the transmission was previously replaced under warranty. Acura may have corrected the major transmission reliability problems in February of 2005. So transmissions that were replaced after that date might be much more reliable.

Wow!! hard to believe how old our cars are now 2K for a TL is a crazy amount. I still look at my car as a 30k car. I also have a 2000TL, have fun and also cant go wrong with the sexy NBP black/Black.

Oh I love to mod, but this will be another daily for me. My rx7 will continue to see the brunt of my modding. I will call acura and find out what has been done on the car so far. Thanks for the tips.

Congrats! I just recently bought a one-owner 2000 TLP, Firepepper Red with 126k on it - but nowhere NEAR as good a deal as you got! I had the same issues that you face - what has been done to it, has it been following the factory service recommendations, etc. Unfortunately, when I registered my car at Acura.com, then both sent them a letter and called them, they had no history on the service, only recalls. They referred me to the original selling dealer, and they called and said they could not release the records without the previous owner's consent, which they could not obtain.
So, I started off with the biggies in the owner's manual, and recommendations on AZ - change tranny fluid, new Iridium spark plugs, change timing belt, change oil and filter, and new air filter. More DIYs from AZ were great - change the cabin air filter, change transmission fluid x3, Seafoam, and some helpful interior articles (installing the iPod adapter).
Again, congrats and make sure to check out the DIY section.

i like how everybody whos new to TLs thinks their car has EVERYTHING.
i.e. "dude my car is fully loaded except navi."
well guess what, that means its standard, sorry. especially for you tl-p folk..
/rant
anyway congrats on the steal of a car.
i would have payed twice that easily.

I wouldn't be bothered modifying a 9 year old car. Save your money for a better car.
These cars are getting on in years and your 9 yearold tranny isn't going to want to be beaten up.
No offense to the kids who buys these and modify them.

i would kill to have this car running 40+ more hp.. and as far as it being old...
my 944 T is ohhh about 23? years old.. and will DUST most people on the road today, and is VERY reliable.. upkeep is key when it comes to cars.. thats why there are still 40 year old cars running around today with all original internals... when you care about your car.. its all about what you want..
my 94 accord wagon is getting a h22 swap as we speak.. i've spent more on that car, then i actually paid for it.. wouldnt change it for the world..

If everyone saved their money for a "better" car, we'd all be driving GT-R's, Porsche's, Lambo's, Ferrari's, NSX's, etc. Not to mention they would all be stock, because we were saving our money for that Bentley/Maserati/Maybach.
I used to never think of "modding" a car, unless it was a coupe or convertible. I feel very safe modding my Acura, because I know it will last a long time with proper maintence. I wouldn't mod a Chevrolet Cavalier, because it would most likely blow up in 2 months. Then you just wasted your money.
I actually think the 2G TL's are a very good car to mod. Sure, they will never be extremely fast.* But with a few bolt on mods, they look better than most of the cars on the road today.
*With the exception of Rajca, JCharged, PHEE, and anyone else with a Sex-Speed.

Anyway, moding a 9 yearold TL is as lame as buying a 9 yearold civic and moding it.
If you're going to mod a car it has to be worth moding. I'm not talking about restoring a vintage/classic car.

Buy yeah those are fast cars.
9 yearold automagic tranny is the shits to 'mod' parts you're putting on it are worth more than the car.
IMHO you're better to save for a car worth moding.
