Need info on the 2G navi screen

Has anyone ever taken apart a navigation screen from a 2G TL? I am looking for the manufacturer of the panel and the model number. I know the screen is built by Alpine, but they certainly did not make the LCD panel.

Also, does anyone know whether it is a resistive or capacitive touch screen?

Thanks,
Paul

There is a post on the 3G forum from a guy who interfaced a USB 4 wire resistive controller to the navi screen. He then could use the stock touchscreen for an in car PC. I am in Canada so the Acura navi is worthless in the 2G so I figured I would use a PC and iGuidance and get me a workable navigation setup.

Later,
Paul

Very interesting. Good luck with that.

I think the 2nd gen navigation touch screen is infra-red based.

"kensteele" posted the following from the Acura CL Helm service manual. I think the CL and TL use the same screen.

Not exactly heat-sensitive, but infra-red.

From page 22-300 of the 3.2CL Service (Helms) Manual:

"The touch panel is an infrared system, so there is no need to press hard. If a touch switch does not function immediately, shift your finger slightly on the switch, and touch it again."

From page 22-313 of the 3.2CL Service (Helms) Manual:

"The display unit uses liquid crystal display (LCD). The LCD is a six-inch-wide, Thin Film Transistor (TFT), stripe type with 280,800 picture elements, The color film and flourescent light are laid out on the bank of the liquid crystal film. The touch sensor on the front of the LCD is an infrared type with ten vertical and seven horizontal infrared rays to produce 70 sensing points. The display unit transmits the signal from each operation key and the touch switches to the navigation unit."

Thanks for the info Bob. The whole infrared thing sounds a little weird though. I found a good explanation of infrared touchscreen systems:

Sounds a little odd to be used in a car, but who knows!

Thanks,
Paul

Might try to install a 4 wire resistive overlay on the factory navi screen. That would handle the pc part and the heater controls would continue to use the existing infrared based.

Does anyone have the actual dimensions (height and width) of the stock navi screen?

Thanks,
Paul
