Angry Navi Problem - Restarts

I just got my type-s navi. When i was playing with it to program in destinations I noticed that it would just restart itself bac kto the Acura Navigation System screen whenever it felt like it. Sometimes it won't do it and it will last that way for an entire trip. But sometimes it doesn't even finish calculating a route before it restarts. It this a bad navigation system? DVD scratched? I checked the wires in the back of the unit they seem to be in firmly. I told the dealer the day after I got it and they looked at it while they put on my kit and spoiler and said they could not reporduce it but they reset the system for me. But then a day or two later it would just do it again. Tonight it pissed me off because it kept doing it while I was trying to find something. It never restarts when I'm just looking at the starry screen with the clock. I've had the car for 3 days.

I think that your navi system must be malfunctioning. I've never had my navi reset on me back to the startup flash screen, and I use my navi a lot. It doesn't matter whatever navi screen is active, I've never had it reset on me in the 11 months that I've had the car.

Might be fixed...

I went to the dealer this morning to make an appointment and show them what it does. I even got it on video on my digital camera of it restarting.

Basically it was restarting more and more on me in the past few days and so I started to doubt that it was software related. But maybe hardware or even something physical. So this morning when I got home I checked out the passenger fuse box just to see and I happened to see the navigation fuse there. So I just tried to take it out and plug it in firmly. So far it has not been restarting. I'm praying that the fuse was the culprit and I don't need to hassle the dealer to get a new unit even though my car is only 4 days old (for me).

You guys ever had any similar problems where refitting the fuse solved it?

I live over by Imperial and Nohl Ranch. Well at least my real house is there. My profile says SD because I just finished my BS there.

I've had occasional freezes and restarts on my old CD-ROM-based Alpine Navi (same as Acura's). Alpine's software is not ironclad by any means and there are significant bugs in it.

However, you shouldn't be seeing resets regularly, unless the area you live in has some mapping characteristics that exposes an error in their software.

It's absolutely unacceptable for this class of embedded system software to freeze and reset more than once a year!

Angry Still does it...

Well, the fuse isn't the problem. It still does it. Today I had a time when once I pressed the "OK" button when the system first came on, it would reset. Did this about 3 times. Then I was able to get as far as set up a location for directions. Once it got to 100% it would reset. Did this a few times as well. Then I got it to go all the way to show the first direction. Then a second later it would reset.

I'm taking it into Tustin Acura on Monday morning. I hope they don't hassle me. And I just hope it's the unit in the trunk only or maybe the unit in the dash but not some crazy electrical problem. I also hope the dealer doesn't make me bring the car in a bunch of times while they "examine" the problem.

Again my car has only been mine for 5 days now. Sad.

It needs a new trunk unit...the front section is only a display/touch-panel. The trunk units leave alot to be desired and some replacement units have a different problem altogether....trust me, I speak from experience

Dude, I'm just down the street at Covered Wagon and Nohl Ranch. If you'd like, I'd be willing to just test-swap DVD's and force download the software and see if that corrects the problems. I think we both have the 2.03V version? You could try Weir Canyon Acura too, they're much closer than Tustin Acura, but have been known to give out Geo Metros as loaner vehicles courtesy Enterprise-Rent-a-ScrapHeap.

Btw, I just got my B.S. at USC. Still looking for work though. Darn economy.

Dude, your NAVI sounds like its either really hosed, or there's something wrong w/ the drive or the disc itself.

In 7 mo. mine has never had an issue like the one you describe at all, it sounds like the DVD beam gets lost and has to reload. Go back to the dealer and see if they can get the entire drive unit replaced. What you're describing is ridiculous.

I had my trunk unit replaced for a bad gyro (keeps thinking I'm turning to one side of the road). Seeing that your car's only 5 days old, you can easily get warranty replacement for that part.

Ah, you probably have the same problem I did! The most difficult thing I had to do is to show them that there was a problem. I ended up using a cheap webcam and recording the screen on my laptop and showed it to the service folks.

Make sure they replace your whole trunk unit. They tried to replace the antenna on me, and of course it didn't help.

I don't know if the unit is still covered after you've moved it to the middle of the trunk, but if it works like the Alpine unit, it will work just fine no matter where you put it as long as it's level.

THanks guys!

Well the dealer popped in a new trunk unit today and all is well. Except that they gave me 2.03 instead of 2.04 (what I originally had). I need to go back and get the later version. My house isn't in the correct spot on the 2.03 map...haha. But so far so good. Works like a charm and no more restarts.

I actually used my digital camera and recorded a video clip of it restarting but I didn't need to use it since when I brought it in to show them the problem it was frozen so they believed me.

I even had an Acura Navigation specialist call me about my problem and to get a better description of what happened. This was independent of the Acura dealer. I guess my problem was pretty unique. Lucky me to be the only one who has a restarting problem. I figured that it had bad RAM in it. It had a pattern but wasn't precisely the same every time.

Thanks again for your input. I hope nothing goes wrong with it otherwise I'll start pulling out my hair like Homer.
