my tranny is done

Hi all,

I have a 2002 tls stock with almost 11k miles. I took it to my dealer today because I was having some issues and as I suspected, my tranny will be replaced.

I always had an issue with its interior noise but was happy with the car because it performed well. But now with the tranny issue, it's not even doing that. Acura has been a serious disppointment. For those who have had their tranny replaced, how has the 2nd one performed? Have there been many cases of having to replace it for a 2nd time? Thanks.

dont worry about it, you get a new and smoother one.
performance will not be affected. you will be happier if anything. just make sure they fix it fast.

I have had my new tranny about 6 months (and 5k miles) and liked the first one better. I will actually be taking the car in tomorrow to have them check it out. It just doesn't shift as cleanly as the first one, which was totally "one" with the car. This new one has a irritatingly harsh 5-4 downshift and usually waits too long to downshift then overdoes it and goes from 5-3.

I'm sure this one is of good quality and won't fail, but it just doesn't seem as well-mated to the car and I swear the car feels slower (as others have noted, but that's very subjective).

Why would you have a complaint about interior noise. My TLS is totally silent inside, and I have used a Radio Shack Sound Level Meter to check out all my cars. This is one of the quietest car's that I have ever measured. One thing about noise in a car, as the level goes down, what remains, and there is always noise in every car, seems more apparent. For example, since my car is so quiet inside, the little air noise that remains is very obvious, but it's not enough to register on the meter over the "ambient" noise level of the drivetrain. This car is really quiet dude, just drive it and enjoy! BTW...my 2002 TLS has the original tranny, and has never had any problems that I didn't cause......like breaking the right mirror, and scratching the template aroound the shifter. This is a great car, and I love it.

Actually I am having mine replaced too and the Dealer told me that Acura is shipping all new Trannies with new computers as well. They are detuning the air\fuel ratios and stuff like that so not as much power is going to the new trannies. Just another little tidbit that pissed me off about acura cheating even MORE HP out of the so called 260 HP engine. This way Acura can hedge the loss of more trannies. Less power = less chance of failure

The sad way Acura is doing business, this division could be just a memory soon.

can't they just buy trannies from someone who can make a good tranny? - Say, GM (Pontiac Grand Prix GTP tranny holds 280 lbs*ft torque and loves it), or Nissan (the Altima and Maxima seem to be doing quite well)

Question

my tranny went out this past weekend... having a new one put in... not sure what to expect

how true is the source that acura is putting in a new ECU that'll drop power output?

my assumption was that since they're dropping in a new tranny.. that most likely our current existing ECU would have to be reset.. thus losing valuable information...

japanese ECU's are relatively smart and can figure out optimal power output my caluculating your driving conditions / styles...

by re-setting it, you lose all the statistics that the little computer has been collecting...

as for the tranny...

from what ive heard... honda/acura made no efforts into redesigning / reinforcing the CL/TL 5-spd auto transmission... in otherwords... the new one that we're getting installed will be another hit and miss game...

but then today when i called the dealership and spoke to the mechanic... they said that acura had strengthened the tranny...

so i don't know who to believe now...

Mine shifts MUCH smoother than before; it's almost unnoticable under normal driving. It kinda freaked me out at first, but when I get on it, it feels sportier than before...
You do get a new computer with the tranny...I had q's about the power being a little off as if it was just me, but after two months and about 3k miles, I don't doubt the air/fuel issues...Good thing I'm looking at the v-afc now!!!

My tranny just went @ 29,500, they had my car for 9 days. It gets worst, when I went to pick up my car on Saturday it had damage around the driver door like someone was trying to steal it, I can't believe they tried to return my car to me like that. So I'll have to go another week or so before I get my ride back. They don't have any Acura loaners and I'm tried of driver a damn mini van! THIS SUCKS BIG TIME. I really like my car but I'm feeling like its time to get rid of my Type S.

Thanks for listening guys I needed to vent.

Unhappy

ewww.....my tranny is starting at act up even when the dealer did a tranny flush like 800 miles or so ago...shifting from 1-2 and 2-3 gears, the tranny is hestiating to upshift for like a couple of seconds...and the car jerks a lil...and when i am at a dead stop and put it in reverse gear the car gives a jerk (and sound that sounds like something that was forced into) b4 moving into reverse...does this sound like my tranny is bout to die? this is my stock tranny and its on about mid 23K miles on it.... :sigh:

EvoRTL-S that is the symptoms that its failing. be careful on the highway now. if you do drive pay attention to the tachit will start creeping up (like slipping clutch) right before it goes. (both of mine were identical when they went, and they both made it about 1 week from start of the weird shifts)

I just had my 2nd tranny replaced (02 TLS). The first at about 50K and the second at 70K. They said the first time they did not put in the updated tranny...... We'll see.......
