Smile My TL Type S Story

Picked up my new TL Type S last weekend. Acura dealers in Chicagoland area would NOT BUDGE on MSRP, but I managed to get a generous amount for my trade-in. Dealer also subtracted splash guards and gave me a break on the higher county tax. Had a few issues with the 2002 model year. My insurance company had no specs, so they priced my policy against a 2001 TL. Acura service department could not diagnose the "SRS" light that was illuminated on the dash. They had to upgrade software to troubleshoot the problem. Kept my car overnight and set me up with a rental car. Turns out a wire connector for driver's side airbag was being pinched under the seat. It was replaced under warranty and all is well.

Navi is superb for everyday driving. Can't wait to use the Navi for extended road trips this summer - Chicago to Dallas in June, Chicago to Niagra Falls to New England coast in August.

Attached is a picture of my Agean Blue Pearl under blue sky on my first joy ride along the Fox River in Algonquin, IL.

Good luck with your research on the Type S. For me it is a dream car. It will be tough to part with this car in 2010. It was tough to part with my 1992 Eagle Talon Tsi, an equally hard-earned gift to myself 9 years and 126,000 miles ago.

I think trade in is the only area that you can work a deal right now with the TL S.
I wonder what a 1995 Lincoln Towncar with 71,000 miles would garner on a trade.

First, congrats on your new TL-S!!! Can you tell me what you meant by "the dealer gave me a break on the higher county tax?" Just make sure he's not BSing you, 'cause sales tax is non-negotiable (if I'm not mistaken). I've heard horror stories about people get penalized several years later for not paying the proper sales tax (with accrued interest)...so just watch your back.

Awesome ride, the blue looks very sharp.

Now on to the question for GB2002: Why are you unloading your 1992 Talon????

I have a 1990 talon tsi awd w/ 122,000 miles (owned it for 10 years), pretty modded. I've spent alot of $$ maintaining modding and racing that car. Now that I need a presentable luxurious car car to commute every day, I'm buying a 2002 TL, and will keep my talon for drag racing, autocrossing, and mostly as a hobby since I do a lot of the work on it myself. At first my wife was hesitant for me to have 2 cars, but I convinced her.

Having a nice TL AND a sports car for "sport" activities should be great.

Question

Sweet ride, GB!!! What dealer did you go to? I am in Buffalo Grove, and don't really like either Pauly in Highland Park, or Arlington, or Libertyville. None of them would give me an even remotely reasonable value for my trade-in (1998 BMW M3). Did you get any freebies? (Spoiler, whatever). What kind of deal did you get (lease, buy, rates, numbers)? Thanks in advance for the info. I am getting ready to get a TL-S as soon as I can either sell or trade-in my M3...

GB2002, did you buy in Libertyville? I'm going there tomorrow to test drive one.

Deniska, if you don't like any of those dealers, try the one in Schaumburg. A friend of mine had good luck there with his 2000 TL. If you go to Libertyville, see John Haake.....he's very good. Another friend of mine bought his 2000 TL from him and has been very satisfied with their service dept. Avoid McGrath in Glenview.

I did pay the appropriate sales tax. We calculated the cost difference had I purchased the car in another county, and that amount was added to my trade-in.

It was tough to trade in my 1992 Eagle Talon. I never envisioned selling it, however it needed new everything. The car had not seen service in over a year and it was due for major repairs. Plus, it was the only way to negotiate any kind of break on the new car.

I purchased my Type S from Arlington Acura in Palatine. I visited Libertyville Acura and telephoned Highland Park Acura. I had the best rapport with Arlington, plus they were the only dealer with the Aegean Blue. The car also had Navigation. Plus I was the first customer to test drive the car (it had 10 miles on the odometer). I purchased the car outright. I opted to finance at 7.25% APR considering the state of my investments these days. Sticker price was $33,710 plus $146.90 for the splash guards. The dealer added $147 into my trade-in as a credit for the splash guards.

I bought the extended warranty (7 years / 100,000 miles) for $1216.00. I also bought rust proofing and sound shield for $495.00 (Chicago thing).

The entire deal took place on a Saturday. We beat each other up to work out the numbers, but in the end, the dealer definitely wore me down. I ended up getting squeezed for an extra $100-$200 between the handwritten numbers on paper and the final typewritten contracts.

Looking back at the paperwork, I only have a few regrets. The extended warranty has a $50 deductible for repairs; I didn't realize this until after the fact. I wish I would have studied the terms more closely at the time. I ended up buying a set of wheel locks for $50 after the sale.

I'll try to post more pics another day...

Nice CAR! That Agean Blue Pearl is better looking outside that it did in the car shows! You'll love it on trips, I'm sure!

Thumbs up

Awesome looking car, GB! I really wanted to get one myself, but I don't like black interior and TL-S doesn't come with FirePepper Red (what's wrong with those Acura marketing people?) Had to settle for regular TL :-(

BTW, It's nice to know that people other than myself still using Lotus Domino ;-)
