7500 miles and can only average 19-19.3 mpg. 18 mile commute to work is 75% freeway (little to no traffic).
this seems low for a 6 cylinder japanese car...
my 98 M3 did better than this...
hell, my 4 wheel drive 2001 Suburban isn't much worse...
not happy

This car is an odd bird. I can get 30 mpg on the highway when I take a road trip, but only 20 mpg the rest of the time. I'll bet if I drove like a little old lady I could squeeze a few more mpg out of it, but I just can't seem to keep my foot off the gas.

That's funny only b/c around that range I hit a low too, but I think it's b/c I was using SS more and consequently... driving harder. My average MPG is about 24-25 now and that's a 35 mile one-way trip with about 80-85% highway mileage. Like the others here... I also have a hard time staying off the gas... especially with the warm weather we're finally having.....

I usually get 31 mpg on long, interstate trips. The rest of the time with mix of city and hwy driving, I average 24-25.
Many people report this problem of low gas mileage. Like a lot of the problems in the TLS, some have it and some don't and there seems to be no explanation.

hell, i don't know what my mpg is but it dropped like a dead bird after 6000 miles...and the damn car trembles when in drive gear...that could be a transmission problem....the car feels harsh when i step on the gas...once again could be a transmission problem...

My gas milage sucks from the begining and it never got any better like other people have experienced. I drive mostly from home to school...around 30mile round trip...one third of the time i'm on streets and the rest of the time i'm on the freeways with adaqute traffic... i only get about 18-19 mpg

As advertised....
I just turned 1,000 miles on my new 02TLS last week and just took a road trip from L.A. to Vegas. I now have 1,600 miles on her.
The road run was SWEET! I cruised between 80-90mph and it felt like 65mph does in my Camry. I ran it up to 100mph a couple of times passing "beaters" and pushed it to 120mph just once during an open stretch to fulfill the need.
I was totally amazed that crusing at 80mph only called for 2500rpm on the tach. 90mph was still under 3K on level ground. The 5 speed really does save the gas
I got 29mph both directions at those speeds with the AC on auto 72 degrees. and for what it's worth, the outside air temp read 87 degrees. EXACTLY the same as the "World's largest Thermometer" read while passing Baker. No need to get out of the car... I made the run in less than 3-1/2 hours and never bothered with a rest stop.
I drive a 25 mile one way freeway commute to work each day and then drive around local for errands, etc. I seem to get around 22-23mpg during these situations. BUT that will probably drop now that I'm out of the break in period... I haven't had it over 5K rpm yet. Time to experience this VTEC growl that I read so much about...
But anyway... the sticker says 19mpg City, 29mpg HWY. You really can't complain when the car does what it is advertised to do. You should have known what the numbers were when you bought the car. This is the first car that I've owned that actually lived up to its sticker specs. Most of them always fall a few mpg short...
Like I say the run was sweet... So far NO RATTLES, NO TRANNY Grief... Fingers are definitely crossed though. It does seem though that no matter what speed I'm doing the car wants to hover around 2K rpm a lot and it seems to feel like it is almost hunting for the proper gear. I kind of feel like it is slightly surging and lunging and hunting at that rpm. It's almost like it's idling down the road at 2k rpm and the slightest change in grade or gas pedal makes a slight hesitation or lunging effect. It feels more tight when it runs around 3k rpm. Anybody else notice this? Or am I noticing an anomaly? It's like I can't tell if its the car surging a bit or am I just hitting dips and bumps in the road type of thing. Please tell me that this is just the road feeding back sensations to the drivetrain, or my paranoid imagination, or the TLS ponies just wanting to be given their head and be opened up a bit, and its not a tranny problem developing.... Because after this road trip... I'M A HAPPY TLS CAMPER!!!

MPG better after oil change
All,
I'm back to "better" fuel economy after the second oil change. I swear, the Honda dealership I went to for my first service -- they must have used 10W-30 'cause I was getting HORRIBLE mileage! (15-18 mpg CITY) But now that I've gone to the Acura dealership, mileage is back to when I first got my car (21+ mpg CITY). No real complaints but now that there is so much civil unrest in the Middle East ... it hurts my pocketbook to fill up!
Canadians add so much fuel tax, it's not even funny! For premium, we pay US$2 / gallon! (I realize that in California, their gas tax is even more disgusting...) I could drive over to Michigan and pay US$1.75... even with the toll it can be worth my while to fill it up when I'm near empty.
Well... enough bickering and back to work...

I'm only averaging around 17 mpg.
My car has < 4000 miles and I have not had my first oil change yet.
I drive about 75% city/25% highway and my commute only averages 10 minutes or so. I don't drive very aggressively.
I guess the short commute could be contributing to the poor mileage, as the engine never really has a chance to warm up.

It seems to work something like this (It's consistent in my experience):
If you are on flat ground, steady throttle car is in 5th, TQ locked.
If you lightly accelerate or slight hill, car stays in 5th, TQ unlocks.
If you hit a slightly larger hill, steady throttle, car downshifts to 4th, TQ locked.
And so on... The trans seems to shift constantly to keep you at optimum mileage, etc. With each shift or TQ lock/unlock you feel a slight bump and your RPM's change.
It was odd at first but works. If I REALLY want to pass someone, I kick it over to sportshift, drop to 3rd and nail it.
BTW, I averaged 31+ on a cross country back in September. I get about 22-24 in the city on average. No complaints here. No rattles or issues after 12K miles!

I went with "syn" Mobil 1 5W-30 at 4400 miles but have heard that it should not be done until after the second change. (There is huge discussion on this, both Pro and Con. Many new cars run syn from the factory and the new Mobil1 is not full syn any more so who knows.) I have not had any trouble but, it would not harm anything to go with a "non-syn" 5W-20 or 5W-30 oil for another change and then switch to synthetic.
Whatever brand you go with, stick to 5W-20 or 5W-30. Your climate may be better suited to 5W-30. Stay away from 10W-XX or higher. It will kill your mileage.
The manual recommends 5W-20.
I have one change of Mobil1 left in my garage. After that, it will be Redline 5W-20. Mobil1 apparently ain't what it used to be.

Thanks Rockin...
Thanks Rockin for the tranny "hunting" reply.
Yeah, I think you're right. It feels like it is really lugging in 5th gear at 2K rpm and the slightest pressure on the gas or change in road grade seems to produce slight surging sensations. It does sound about what I would expect to feel if the TQ kept locking and unlocking. However, when I feel this, I keep my eyes glued to the tach and I don't see it move a bit. Like I say it may all be in my head just feeling the road dips jerking the car around. I'm not used to this tight of a car. It shifts really smooth so far, no slippage or clanking. And man does that VTEC sound nice when I'm crusing up a freeway ramp with it running up to 5-6K rpm...
