Alright so my friend claims that those ebay "superchips" work. I told him that there's no way you can improve 12 mpg's on the highway and 10 in the city along with adding 50hp and lb ft. of torque at the same time for under $40. he says that he put it on and it does work. Has anybody tried this or is everyone on my side?

Many of those type chips force the car to run on full rich mode which does make more power but is not running lean like its supposed to
Will cause issues before too long--if it gives any positive results at all
What work in other cars has no relevance to the TL with its trick everything systems

Chips can make impressive #s ON Turbo charged cars, not NA. BUT those types of chips are not 40 bucks. Your friend wasted money, is probably loosing hp and mileage.

 

I have one in my TL and It works great. I get 40 mpg now and I also dynoed the car. It's impressive. You should listen to your friend he's a smart guy.

There is a major difference between chipping your car and tuning it and buying a chip off ebay.

The first requires a dyno and someone who knows how to tune a car. You can upload new fuel and ignition maps to the car, and can usually gain power and fuel economy in the process.

All motors are not equal. Anyone selling a chip that is for every motor and will net 5 hp is full of shit. Some motors respond better to more timing at certain parts, while another engine will want less.

 

a turbo car is the ONLY type of car where a chip will make a noticable difference..
My friend had a passot 1.8T or 2.0T and installed a ADR chip and it added like 40HP but then his gas milage would probly suffer... NO chip will add HP and MPG.. What a retart!
