Thumbs up My Fading Door Trim Project for the Weekend

Hey guys I just wanted to post this up for anyone who may need help with this.

I'm going to fix the the fading door trim because they are starting to look like SHIT , and after bothering the local Cerritos Acura they told me that this type of mishap is not covered after 50k (when factory warranty is expired) I think thats a load of SHIT because why should it matter if its 49k or 51k its still Acuras cheap, faulty design/ shitty parts.

These parts cost around $50 - $60 - brand new, I thought I could give it a try and if I somehow mess up, I will just buy them. And they charge like 300 labor or something outrageous like that.

I have included some before pictures, and hopefully will be posting after pictures.

Here are the instructions in *.pdf format:

http://www.geocities.com/fastandthef...us/b04-033.pdf

These are the diagrams that it reffers to:

Hope this helps!

I got two of my trim pieces replaced Monday. (Why they didn't just go ahead and replace all four, dunno....will probably have to go back again in a year to get the other two replaced when they go bad).

But anyways, they didn't take my door apart. I was occasionally glancing through the window to look at the guy doing the trim, and they never had my door apart. You might want to check into that to save you some effort.

Question extended warranty coverage?...

I wonder if this is covered if you have the extended new car warranty for after 4y/50k? Anyone know? I'm going to call up Acura Care and see what can be done about this...
BTW, my car is still under the 24,000 Certified Pre-Owned new car warranty which extends past 50k, mine goes to 62k, and i'm just under it!

Upon calling them no one picked up the phone, so I had to leave a message for them to get back to me on the next business day. I'll see what happens...

Originally when I went to see a friend of mine, that works at the Acura body shop where I got my car he said that this was going to be a recall, so I called the dealership and asked about it in the service department. So he said it is covered up to 50k. At the time I forgot that the 62k warranty that I have is the same as a 50k warranty if you buy new, so I'll be calling them back to make sure they take care of my car... and do a better job of vacuuming out my car too!

Basically means if they want to they can, if they don't they don't have to.. Technically it means the dealership will be able to get paid for the repair because they are allocated a certain ammount of "goodwill credits" per month or year. They typically save them for their return customers or the customers, like us, who drive the more expensive model cars.

Had the same problem with my car. I ended up just buying new ones cause I didn't feel like going through the hassle. If it happens again though I would be interested in doing what you've done...as long as I like the way it looks. Only took me about 30 minutes to do driver's side front and rear. Very easy to do. Looking forward to some after pics.

Wow, seems like a good DIY. Keep us posted with your experience Actright. As for the carbon fiber door trim, anyone know where to get it?

That looks exactly like what happened with mine, but I got it in before the warranty expired. That is a taped piece, in fact all of the trim on the windows is tape. What they did with mine was to send it in to the body shop and they disassembled the doors to get the pieces all out, then stripped and PAINTED them. It looks great, used high gloss just like they looked before.
I was told by the service manager this is a common issue with our cars, does not happen with all of them, but when it does, its not something that just reaches a certain point and stops. He also stated that it he felt that it was stupid that they had used tape to begin with.

SO.... as a word of warning, If you see this (delamination) or like bubbling on the trim around the windows and you are still under warranty, get it in to get it fixed, and make sure they PAINT it rather than replace it with tape covered pieces. If you are out of warranty, take the pieces to a body shop, and get them painted.

Finally done, after debating it for a while.

Hey guys I finally did it, It came out like shit so please laugh on! I had some vacation time so I just went down and used whatever was in my garage to do the deed. Hope you like.

first encounter

bend it a little more

there she is, time to drill her

gotta yank this out

yank yank

stripped naked

its off

the only tools needed, plus my mits

sandpaper from my model kit

wetsanded that mug

all sanded and ready to paint

1st coat

2nd coat

finished:

there it is guys, still some crustation up on there, I started to run out of paint and I held the can close to the trims *I was getting desperate that I wouldn't have enough) Im going to redo them this weekend, at least the paint will give me some surface area to sand.

So yeah it aint that bad, go for it.

How many coats of paint did you use? Did you use any clear coat? It looks like you need to redo it, but now that I've seen it done I'll do mine.

You've got the disassembly/assembly process down, so it's great that you'll redo it.

Some tips for you:

It looks like you did a nice job sand prepping initially. You should do that again, but this time prime and sand before painting to get an even smoother surface for the paint to stick to.

Then paint like you did (though don't spray so close, as you already learned ), 2 or 3 coats of black gloss finish if you can find it. And be patient waiting between coats (I always screw that one up...).

Let it dry - preferably 24 hours in dry weather to play it safe - and then shoot some clear coat on it. It is key to let the black paint dry thoroughly before clear coating. Otherwise, the paint will start lifting, and it will look awful.

Good luck. I say 2nd time is the charm in this case!

P.S. Funny, I had all kinds of problems and issues with my '02 TL-S, but I never had this one.

How'd putting it back together work out? Was it tricky? Are the seals and everything as tight as it was before? I'd hate to take the trim off to fix and end up with some irritating rattle somewhere.

thanks for the feedback, i didn't even think about primer, but now that you mention it im going to do it again, and do it clean style. Your very lucky, my main point of doing this is the tought of having to buy new pieces, and for them to start to crap out again in two years. Is your car parked in the sun often?

First locate that screw, that has to be pulled back, and the trim that is connected to it has to be pulled out also. This project only requires you to pull back the flap shown in the first 3 pictures, and the inner glass run channel that covers the screws. I was able to remove everything in about 10 minutes after figuring how everything was pieced together by the first window (I started on the drivers side) All the seals fit back in perfectly, no glue used even though I thought I might have needed it

Im cheating.
I got Tim Smith to get the parts under warranty and all I pay for is 1 hour labor.
Beats paying for 4 new ones.

I have enough projects at home that require sanding, dont want to do it on my car also.

But best of luck to you diy guys!

I tried and totally screwed up. TIP: Let the paint dry long enough before you spray the clear coats. I did'nt. The black paint "lifts" off of the plastic.

b-4

after

But I did paint my shift plate.

I'm gonna try again next week.
