My car needs some Viagra!!!

Has this happened to anyone else?

This is my first powerful car by any stretch of the imagination, and I thoroughly enjoy it as often as I can. The other night I was cruising at about 70 mph up the highway on my way home when this Camaro RS pulled up next to me and started taunting me. It was a guy and his girlfriend, I was with mine as well. Since he only had a 6 cylinder Camaro I figured I would drop into third and just leave him, which I did. a couple of miles down the road he catches up to me and starts up again, so again I dropped into third and left him in the dust only this time I didn’t slow back down to 70. A few more miles up the road he finally catches me again only this time we were going about 85. He was on my side of the car this time his girlfriend was just staring at me. I dropped into fourth and mashed the pedal. It seemed like forever to get to 110 and he was along side me the whole time. Where did my power go? The tach was reading 4500 and I was in 4th and going about 100 mph, but I had no power it must have taken 4 seconds to get from 100 to 110. I don’t have any mods or sticker to make me go faster, just wondering if this is normal or if I should take it in. But then what would I tell them? Uh my car losses it power over 100 mph? Advice anyone? And btw, it was a deserted stretch of highway, no traffic at all.

Welcome to the comprimised world of TL-S.

Fourth gear acceleration svcks. I learned that to make any kind of brisk pass at speed, you need to drop to 3rd gear, tach-up to 5K+ and motor; otherwise you're slogging along out in the left lane with your face hanging out.

More torque lower in powerband is gooood!!!!

in TL-P and TL-S forth and fifth gears are overdrive.
So u won't have that kind of fast acceleration u had one to third gears does.

4th and 5th gears are not overdrive, they are just higher gears. your car is fine, you just shift to 4th when you should have shift to 3rd. that's all. 3rd gear goes up to around 110-115 mph.

The lower the gear the quicker the cars is, but it can only go up to a maximum speed, that is why you need higher gears to reach a higher speed. In the contrary if you only had higher gears your car would have no power at low speed. Gears are basically to maintain good power at any speed, but the ecu or human control puts a higher gear when power not need it to save gas.

Hopefully we won't have gears in the future with some kind of new tranny.

Actually, you're wrong. 4th and 5th are overdrive gears.

Overdrive simply means that they have a gear ratio of less than 1:1. 4th gear has a ratio of 0.653:1, and 5th has a ratio of 0.470:1.

well if you are over 80 you can't down shift to 3rd i believe. you have to be under in order to down to 3rd using ss.

our 4th and 5th sux coz' they are overdrive, their acceleration is horrible. but our 3rd can go to around 120 already which if you ask me, i think it's time to stop racing.

but if you REALLY want, use 3rd to redline, then pass it a bit (about 7200rpm), shift, and you will be in a higher rpm in 4th, and once you hit vtec in 4th you ARE going again.

so that's usually what i do. if i am over 80 i just slow down a bit, with till under 80, shift to 3rd, and gun it.

120 mph in 3rd gear? Mine can only reach 165 km/h (105 mph). 120 mph is around 192 km/h, wich my 3rd gear won't reach without being in redline at 7500 or 8000 RPM. BOOM, fuel cut off.

well i have done that one once before, but one thing for sure is i did past 110mph. and before i shift to 4th i looked at my speedo and it said 120 (or 119).

you sure you weren't on some kind of inclined? coz' 105mph is really low, i believe the TL-P max that in 3rd.

Well....I am pretty sure I have been most of the time in a straight highway, but I never pass above 165-168 km/h in 3rd, and the tach at 6900-6950 RPM.

Do you have a mph-kmh conversion table?
165kmh is exactly what mph?

i don't know it off the head, i will check on it tomorrow and let you know

but with the fact that 100kmh is about 61 to 62mph, 165kmh means only about 100 to 105mph.... i will double check.

165 kmh = 103.125 mph (1 mile = 1.6 km)

Well.. I think you're right 'cuz last time I was in 3rd and went up to 100 mph. (The tach reading was around 6950 or 7000 rpm; can't remember the exact number but it was in redline zone.)

Hopefully I didn't damage the car. That was my first time redline it and only been few seconds.

Speedo error becomes very significant at speeds > 100 MPH.

I think those pleople who went above 110 mph in 3rd, maybe they don't have stock tires and rims. Other size could affect tach reading.

Stock TLS will reach 99 MPH @6900 RPM (or 103 @7200) in 3rd.
This is actual speed, not what the speedo says.

You would need a huge bump in HP or drastic speedo error (or some combination of the 2) to see 120 in 3rd at the same RPM.

BTW: 6900 (3rd) = 4400 (4th)
7200 (3rd) = 4600 (4th)

rominl, I am pretty sure now, I just test it on a straight highway.

I was in 3rd, the max I can reach was 162 kmh at 6900 (just before the redline).

Give me your test once you have a chance.

ok, i have tested my car yesterday night when there was very little traffic on the freeway. on third year, when i was about 6800 or 6900, my car was around 112 or 113 already. i didn't try to hit the rev limiter coz' i really feel very comfortable.

i didn't floor all the way from 1st. i was going 90 or so at 5th, then i downshif to 4th and let it slowed down to 75, shift it to 3rd and floored it.

Ok, I just tested the redline on 3rd gear today on a straight highway at -15 degree celcius.

Fact : 170 kmh at 6900 RPM

That means around 105.6 mph.

See the speed conversion here : http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/speed

OUR 4TH GEAR HAS NO VTEC, LIKE THE ACCORD COUPE V6's....and when you're going about 90, if u wanna shift to 3rd, put it in ss, let off the gas, throw it in 3 and floor it.....

Bah bah bah! here we go again. I tested this out the very same night of the crash as well.....and let me again state. 2nd gear tops at ~70 at least thats what I've maxed at (my rev limiter hits...and i kept it there to make SURE it was the rev limiter) and you can downshift to 2nd going 65. 3rd for me tops at ~110 and kept the rev limiter on it too. As for downshifting at 80. Well...mine downshifted to 3rd at 80 just fine. It's when you are over 85 that's you are not allowed to downshift to 3rd no more. (I know I know I'm nit picking...but hey, I keep my watch accurate with popcorn no farther than a second, so consider me VERY anal :p ) Try cruize control at 80 and switch to ss. I'll put my money down that it'll let you downshift. Remember. My tests were to the rev limiter and not just to redline. One the rev limiter hits, I looked down at my speedo to watch my needle jump back and forth.
