My '03 TL-S vs 2000 Audi S4 6-speed

My neighbour just traded his '97 Trans Am for a 2000 Audi S4. I've never been a big Audi fan so I don't know much about them. He says it has 250 hp, twin turbocharged.

I could tell by the way he was "comparing" our rides that he would like to get out and find out which is faster.

So, my question to all of you is, how would my TL-S do against his S4?

Incidentally, his S4 is a very nice looking ride.

Thumbs down

You don't want to do that. Never race a manual car that has two turbos and all wheel drive.

Unfortunately I would have to put my money on the S4. Not only does he have AWD, so he would most likely rape you off the line, but he's got the twin turbo charger, which would definitely compliment well against out VTEC engines. All in all, if you drive your TL-S to its full potential, then you may have a chance at victory, but if in any way you mess up, whether it be while taking off or in the process of racing, he's got you in the books.

good luck with that. If you need help with anything, call me up...I'll come down to pickering, and give the S4 a run for his money!!!

take care.

Hey if that S4 is anything close to what I race yesterday at the track (A4 modded), you will loose.

Don't do it. I raced my stock TL-S to a friend's lightly modded '00 S4 and I got RAPED.

By the way, it's BI-turbo, not TT. There's a big difference.

Bi-Turbo = 1 1/2 Turbos...or something like that.

.. oh and don't bother racing it, unless you want to get your ass handed down to you.

The S4 smokes, sounds like a sure loser. He has every advantage including weight.

If I were you and there was a safe place to do this, I'd say why not race and find out for yourself? Acknowledge to him that you will probably lose badly but also let him know that you're curious about how a TLS would run against an S4. You don't have to win every race you know. He's got every factor in his advantage but it would be nice to see how the TLS stacks up.

that statement is incorrect...he doesnt have a chance even with a perfect launch and shifts...the s4 is just plain faster

In a best case scenario, a TLS will keep up with an automatic S4 so if he sux at shifting, you may get lucky.

Sounds unanimous. If I race this S4, I am not going to win.

Well, if I have an opportunity, I will race him. I’d better do it sooner than later because this guy is a mechanic and he already has some mods planned. I have never backed down from a challenge, even when I’ve known I was going to get my butt kicked. I’m not about to start now.

Just out of curiosity, how would the TL-S do against the various 3 series BMW’s?

That's the spirit! Make sure you let us know how it goes. As far as the BMW 3 series, none of them can flat out beat us except the M3. The 328 and 330s put up the best challenge but I have yet to lose to one. Actually I did lose to a 330 before but that was on purpose. After pulling on him on an open lane (on a 3 lane highway, I tried to merge into the middle lane cuz mine was about to end and he was on the far left. Well, he saw he was losing and cut me off so I backed off instead of walking him on the shoulder of the highway, which I could have done easily.

Here's the outcome:

S4: 1
TL-S: 0

But just race him anyways to see how you fair against him.

Your only chance is if his car breaks or he lulls into a coma behind the wheel. But, you can't win them all...

Do audi's still have the reliability issues they used to have? (or a better question might be, if you had the money would you buy one?)

As far as I know, this highly aspirated engine and the suspension setup of the S4 is awesome. The Type-S may just be a tad too heavy to keep up with the S4. The AWD makes the weight distribution almost nice and even. And the Quattro system is race-proven. And the newer S4 has a 340 HP V8 too.

Too bad Audi reliability (VW product) and expensive maintenance ruins an otherwise reputable car.

.. but no Bi-Turbo anymore. I would rather choose an older gen. S4 than the newer v8 models.

Run him from a roll and you stand a better chance because he loses the AWD advantage. S4s are fast but not super fast (like an M3). I've gone to the drags with a bunch before I got my headers and they were pulling similar times (albeit most were faster, not by much). If the guy knows how to launch it then you will lose, otherwise it will be an interesting race. The S4 should beat you almost everytime but he has more variables to contend with in a 6-speed.

A simple chip and you can forget about everything I said as you will lose unless he forgets to turn on the car.

OMG, I hope you are kidding. There is no way to have half a turbo on a car :wow: Anyway, bi-turbo implies that the turbos are of equal size, spool at the same time, and both provide the boost. Twin turbo truly denotes turbos of unequal size, the smaller one spooling early and then handing the boostage off to the larger turbo once its spooled up (think twin turbo supra, RX7, etc)

Anyway, unless its a slow S4 (they are out there), you will more than likely lose. But its more fun beating them in an A4

Anyway, for those that care, I have a Black Evo now Mods commencing Moday. Haha

I'm glad I'm not the only one that knows the Audi S4 DOES NOT have 1 1/2 turbos (Bi-Turbo = 1 1/2 turbos?--WTF). Incidentally, the first time I raced my 2000 S4 I ran a 17.1 (started off in third, missed second) and I barely lost to my friends IS300. They are really fast, my next two runs were both 14.5's with 1.9 60 ft's. Although I have seen TL-S's run high 14's--I say give him a run for his money!!

depends. i have a 330ci manual, and i know i could beat TLS. now 4 door and autos i think TL-S would win, but manual is hard to contend with

Big difference in putting power down on the pavement. A friend has a CL Type-S 6M, that car gave me a real feel of the 260HP VTEC compared to my TL-S.

S4 is a beast modded. Dont mess w/ it.

Im not sure a Blower would even help ya .

When ever someone in an S4 wants to "race ya" and he says hes "stock" ... you can almost bet he has atleast downpipe and a chip ( if nothing is visible when u pop his hood ).

So, id suggest you invest in a "weekend/race car" and keep your TL-S as a daily driver... its perfect for that! safe, reliable, and damn comfortable!
