its usa numbers are rated at 19 city 27 hiway iirc with an average of 300-350 miles on freeway per tank
much less in town per tank

The TL is hard to get moving but once going it cruises with ease
stop and start are the worst for mileage

If you have 60k MILES or more its time for seafoam and spark plugs NGK Iridium

i average around 200-250 to a full tank with mixed city/highway driving (but mostly city).

i blame part of my bad mileage on my heavy sub box in the trunk and the fact that its constantly sucking up power/gas

already seafoamed twice, havent changed out spark plugs yet. how much difference would it make?

2003 TL-S with 72k here... I just drove a few tanks worth from KC to Dallas and back this weekend and averaged about 26mpg with an average speed in the neighborhood of 83mph. That got me about 360ish miles on a tank.

As for the city, I average about 18mpg and get about 260 miles on a tank.

Edit: and I drive my car hard... lots of flooring when possible, so less aggressive drivers should see better mileage

Sounds pretty normal to me, that's exactly about what I get with mostly city driving. My car is completely stock and all I have is a sub box with 2 12"s in the trunk. You guys think having subs in the trunk would really affect the gas mileage enough to make a noticeable difference? I just sea foamed my car for the first time this past week and then did an oil change for my first time and switched to synthetic oil. I took it for a spin and noticed a smoother acceleration on my way to the gas station. I filled my tank up and still have some more driving to do, I'll let you guys know if I see a difference in my mileage or not.

i cant believe people are getting that much less than 300 mpg in city.. i thought i had horrible gas mileage till this thread arose...

i get about 310 city stop and go every week and 400+ when i drive mostly highway miles.

lol ya, the body work must make your car drive as if there were no drag!
Another thing I thought i would bring up as far as gas and stuff goes, does anyone seem to have any issues topping off their gas tank at the gas station? this might sound crazy but I personally have in the past, liked to fill my car up until the gas is almost over flowing at the gas cap. I've stopped doing that though after a while, but I notice that after the gas pump stops from fueling up my car, I can still manage to get like over 2 more gallons in the tank until it's full at the cap! I was kinda OCD about this for a while and I would sit there and slowly keeping putting more gas in as the fuel got up to the gas cap and then slowly drained back down. any ideas as to what may cause this given i can get over 2 whole gallons after the gas pump shuts off?

Just stop after the gas pump stops from fueling up your car, if you overfill to the top then fuel will get into the Evap System and block the system and will cause CEL ....Do not overfill the tank , it's bad .

Well, a 2003 TL has a 17.2 gallon tank, but the most I've ever put in my car is 14.3 gallons. I try to never go more than 10-20 miles after the gas light comes on, but clearly there is about a 3 gallon reserve in the car... which is why you've probably forced a bit more gas in your tank than the typical 14ish gallons.

or i dont have a lead foot like younger guys that occupy this forum.. my car rarely sees 3k RPMs

ps. its simple math that shows even if you driving and getting 18mpg in the city you should be getting over 300 a tank...

I saw roughly 20 extra miles of city driving (only) by putting my automatic in Neutral at every stop. 250 in gear stopped, 270 in neutral stopped.

haven't seafoamed yet. no K&N filter yet.

^^ same as having a 200 lb guy in the passenger seat... any weight will affect mpg... but enough to notice alot? not sure. never had gotten into the thumping trunk scene.. but i'd imagine it does affect it negitavely.

This would be true if you actually use the reserve, but our cars only use a little more than 14 gallons before you need to refill, which equals roughly 250 miles.

Gas light comes on when 14 gallons are used, and most guys will tell you they always fill up the moment it comes on, or long before it ever gets the chance to come on... last thing you want to do is deal with your car running out of gas and then having engine problems...

our gas light comes on EXTREMELY early on these cars... leaving you with nearly a 1/4 tank...

i dont think anyone posting how many miles a tank they are getting are basing it off 3/4's of a tank.

i refill mine right before the E.. which is completely safe.. and i usually refill right at 16 gallons... but yes, you can only put 14 gallons if you go by the light..

Drive normal. Anywhere from 60 - 70km/h in the city. Maybe once in a while I'll rip it. Wouldn't say I have a heavy foot, more like cruising speeds ya know? lol

I drive mainly city. Just filled up @ 14.2 gallons with 214 miles on the tank. Comes out roughly to 15 MPG.

But when I drive 100% highway I can easily get 30+ MPG and cruise at 80-85 mph. Most I got was 32 MPG.

i get about 230-250mpt on my cl-s6, but thats bc im at wot most of the time
my tl-p gets way over 400mpt, i average about 28-29mpg and fill up on 87 octane. about 85% highway, 10% city, and 5% stuck in traffic

city driving will kill your mpg.

I get 300 miles per tank in the city and more than 400 on the highway. For older TL models, try cleaning out the injectors and maybe new plugs.

I have had my car for one year (today) yeah!! I average 381 miles per tank, and the average of 14.5 gals when I fillup. That gives me an average of 26.25mpg, I Seaformed about 2 months ago, and my average mpg has increased almost 2mpg. No other special mods, all stock, and I usually exceed the posted limit by 5-10mph. I do travel 80% freeway most days.

Freeway driving is the magic ingredient for high MPG in a 2nd gen TL.

Meh, I'm with rockstar on this one... I can get over 300miles city driving easy, on top of that I have a horrible lead foot and as soon as someone pokes me I floor it. Even with that horrible driving I have never gone under 250 miles a tank, and I also have never filled up for more then 15.1 gallons.
