As time goes on, you mpg will start to increase. When I first got the car, I could barely get like 200 miles to a tank, now I'm at like almost 300...but on average about 250 due to mods...lead foot . It just takes time. As the car progressively goes through its "break in" time, it'll get better. Be patient.

I have a 02 acura-tl type S. From day one I have been very satisfied with the gas mileage. I average 25mpg city/hwy driving and on road trips as high as 31mpg. Seems like your mileage is very low. I always get well over 300 miles to the tank. 400 in some cases. 25mpg should get you 425 miles per tank.

My mileage sucks too!!!
I am getting 25mpg - 95% Freeway.
Had Acura do a "fuel consumption test"
Came out at 24.8 mpg. They said for me to be covered under warranty, my car has to get 24 mpg or less.
I only have 2800 miles on my car. If it does not get better at 6000 miles, I am NOT going to use Synthetic oil or a great filter in my car.
I think at 99,000 miles, with wear and tear, I should get less than 24 mpg.....Then Acura will have no choice but to give me a new engine. I can live with that.

I thought it was 4yr/50K, or did you buy an extended warranty?

With mostly city driving, we average around 21mpg. Moving to mixed, it goes up to about 24-25. On road trips, it's 29-32 (at 75-80mph).

Warming the engine and underinflated tires are two MPG killers. Bad front end alignment will, too. Excessive brake drag (or improperly adjusted E-brake), etc.

Synthetic shoud help slightly, maybe 1mpg.

EDIT- Right now, in Jersey, I'm sure they are using Oxygenated fuels (look for MTBE or Ethanol added on the pump). These will drop your mileage 10-15%, despite what the gas people say. I've done the tests.

I average between 22-24 depending on how I drive... that's with about 85% highway driving. On road trips I've gotten over 30 easily. City driving will kill you though.... one tank I had about 40% of local driving (around town, etc.) and my MPG was just under 21.

FYI.... changing to synthetic improved my MPG less then 1/2 a MPG.... so don't expect much from that.

i get around 27-8 mpg mostly hwy driving but i have a VERY heavy foot. i have noticed on many of my long trips mpg drops considerably between 85 and 95 mph it droped to around 24mpg, keep it below or above that and 29+ is easly obtainable. one trip i averaged 105 mph for around 300 miles and got 31 mpg

Not another one of these again.....
anywayz. MPG varies on how you drive the car.
If you ask ten people, nine of them will have a different MPG.
I'm only doing about 19mpg. mostly city thats why. If i'm on the freeway then the number jumps up to 26mpg. my car is fairly new as well.

Highway I get about 28-30, unless I am breaking 100 a lot, or passing lots, when I pass, I have a lead foot. Other than that I drive mixed, and get about 21-24...no biggie, my truck gets 12-15 so this is great for me.

well ill add my MPG stats too... just to see how my car's mileage is , i kept track of everything and after 6200miles determined that my car is getting 23mpg with mixed city/highway ... i will expect it to go up to 25MPG i hope, but most of my mileage gets killed in traffic

I have a 2001 regular TL with 45000 miles. I use synthetic and have a CAI.

If I drive 65mph on all freeway I get about 32 mpg. If I drive all freeway at 80mph, then I get about 30mpg.

If I drive mixed, it's around 24 mpg if I'm easy on the pedal...then around 20-22 mpg if I drive aggresively.

If all local and aggressive, then it hovers around 20 mpg...I don't recall getting less than 20mpg though.

Hope this info helps.

'03 TLS, mixed city and highway, I get 400 miles easy per tank. I have 7700 miles on the car and use synthetic.

K&N drop-in filter is the only engine mod I have on the car.

Straight highway, I get around 34MPG.

On my 2,000 mile trip up north, I decided to measure the MPG every time I had to refuel. Driving in the city (NYC), I was able to achieve 23.97 MPG. This included heavy acceleration at times and lots of stop and go traffic, sometimes bumper to bumper. On the highway, I got 27.28 MPG, 33.95 MPG, 31.74 MPG, and 33.17 MPG (still have all the receipts with the odometer readings). I usually maintained a speed of 70-80 MPH and the car was fully loaded: 5 passengers with a full (I mean full!) trunk. Although I have never let the refuel light come on since I bought the car, my data leads me to believe I can achieve 500+ miles per tank if I tried to max it out.

Hmmmm,,, The thread leads me to belive that there is something really wrong with my car. I usaually get about 12 - 14 mpg all city driving. The best i have gotten was 18 mpg with about 70% highway. I have a heavy foot, but i don't think it's that heavy. When i check my mpg every time i refuel, and when i try to get a good mpg i don't go into vtech, and never pass 4k.

Question. This fuel consumption test that Andysara talked about, is this something all dealers do? When i asked my dealer (which i don't go to anymore) they told me that all they can do is check for leaks.

You guy's think i can get a new TLS because of bad fuel consumption??? he he (don't i wish!!!)

The fuel comsumption test was done by my local Acura dealership (After I complained about really poor gas consumption).
If your freeway mileage falls below 24 mpg, that is a warranty repair. Acura has to either fix-it, or swap out your engine (provided your engine is STOCK with no mods)

Andy,

How's your tire wear on the front? A bad alignment could be hurting you. Alternately, a bad O2 sensor could, as well.

Thanks for the input T Ho.
Tire wear is even. 32 psi per tire (cold)
Car is steady as a rock at "ahem" 90 mph.
Bad O2 sensor perhaps...but I do not think so. The guys at Acura ran a FULL diagnostic on my car, including a compression check.
They also hooked my car up to a computer (not the handheld unit. The full blown one). No error codes. Readout was fine.

c44u,

How are your driving habits? Do you make it a point to warm up the car first? Do you hold gears, etc? These are all mileage killers.

If none of that, 18mpg highway is absolutely unacceptable, and there's no way I'd live with that. They'd either fix it, or replace it.

Andy,

The toe-in could be excessive, and you won't see it on the tire wear until it's too late. I had this problem on a Z28 I had. Picked up 1.5mpg highway once fixed.
Do you notice a lot of soot at the tailpipe? And, you said 95% highway? Is that really so? And, are you at speed the whole time? I've spent some time in WPB, and it makes Orlando traffic seem "light" sometimes.

Todd

c44u,

I had a Ford Expedition as a company car for a while, and I got better mileage in that beast than you are getting in your TL. Have you checked the common maintenance items that kill mileage (some have been mentioned before)?

-Tire pressure
-Dirty air filter
-Bad alignment
-A lot of nonessential stuff/weight in the car that can be removed

Has your check engine light ever come on (other than during startup)? Do you always use MTBE/ethanol blended gas?

As far as my driving habbit, i do drive fast and hard, but were talking about doing that one or two nights in a month. When i do a MPG test, i make sure i baby the car. The uasuall distance i get out of a tank is between 190 - 230 miles, on 15 - 16 gallons of gas.
As far as the car is concerned everything is in order, tire pressure checked once a month, air filter changed about 4k miles ago, alighnment and balance done at the same time, and the car is alway's empty, nothing in the trunk except for a jacket. I usually have a passanger, but body weight should play that big of a role.
I put sunoco 93 in my car, only.

I think it's time i take a trip out to a different dealer and make a stink. I just hate losing my car for so many day's. Every time my car is not around me, im depressed, And have to downgrade to a 95 altima till i get my car back.. HOW BAD IS THAT? :-(

I know what you're saying. For a while I owned both a 96 Altima and my TL-S...

...but then I sold the Altima

Since you are in NY, are you using Oxygenated Gas right now ??

T Ho

I'll have Acura check my toe-in the next time.
My daily commute is:
1 mile to Freeway from home
25 miles on Freeway (at 60-80 mph)
3/4 miles to office.
I rarely drive in the city. Everything I need is located 1/2 mile within my home.

Do you drive this 1/2 mile to these places? That's a giant mileage killer.

Have you taken any road trips yet, where you can run through a tank in a single event?

When I run my commute, similar to yours, except only 20 miles, I run about 25mpg. Yet, on a long road trip, I've hit 31.6mpg (at 75-80, with a loaded vehicle, AC on).

I live in Florida, use 93 octane fron any place I can find, and I drive really hard. On a trip I average around 27mpg on the highway driving about 85mph with the a/c on and during my weekly commute it is around 22mpg with my lead foot...
