Post Motor Trend road trip report

In the May issue, under 'what is not hot', climate control ergonomics and over-engineered Sportshift are mentioned. What do the Tl-S owners think of the climate-control and Sportshift?

I don't have a TL-S but I'm sure the 01 and 02 are not that much different. I notice that the climate control is not that bad. You have to keep in mind that the climate control is integrated into the Nav models.

I test drove a TL-S and the SS doesn't operate any different than what I have. I like using SS but not all the time. For some, it may seem excess but it is a great way to relieve stress, and is pretty fun sometimes. I would not use it in traffic though.

If I remember the article correctly, they mentioned not liking the fact that the SportShift won't hold 1st gear and the fact that some of the climate control settings are part of the NAV screen.

We set the climate control(non-nav) when we got the car, and haven't touched it since. Stayed comfortable from freezing to 80s temps. I can't see anything wrong with this, unless you just like to fiddle with stuff.

Haven't used the sport-shift much, which surprised me since this is the first car I've ever owned with an auto. I'd have to play with it more to see if the automatic 1-2 upshift is a problem for me.

I live in a hot climate. The A/C on this car is darn good!!!

The SS is fine but a little sluggish and the 1st gear thing is kind of annoying.

I've yet to have to use the NAV screen to do a manual override on the climate control. The first time I turned on the front defroster I thought for sure I would have to speed up the fan. But then the fan kicked up all by itself. Nice.

What I hate about the sportshift is that once you get into 2, you cannot downshift into 1st again, even though in auto mode if you floor it at the same speed, it downshifts into 1st....

Thumbs up

I like to fool around with the sportshifter and I especially like to use it to downshift thereby saving some wear and tear on the brakes as I am hard on brakes. As far as the climate control system this is a MUST have for me. Living in South Florida if I did not have the CC I would constantly be fooling with the fan speeds. To hot, to cold, the suns on me, the suns not on me; you get the drift. The CC keeps me comfortable in almost all conditions and it seems to be an extremely good CC system. I have had three cars with climate control and the TL is as good as any.

If you don't order the Navigation system the climate control is the easiest to use I've ever seen in a car.

Sportshift is great in traffic, curves or mountain driving. You can't select 1st gear. As fast as you accelerate through first gear that may not be a problem. It downshifts into and out of 1st by itself. After that it holds the selected gear. TL-S has tons of grunt even in second.

yea, the shift from 1 to 2 is slightly annoying but after you get used to it, it vanishes.. feels like I have a 4 speeder
but at any rate, I found out that in traffic, if you dont mind shifting constantly before the rpms hit 2000, you can save a lot of gas ^_^
