Motor Mount Question
Motor Mount Question
2000 3.2 TL in for the third tranny swap. Dealer calls me this morning and says I need two motor mounts- one rear ($199) and one side ($137), and "...while we have your car on the rack, do you want me to do this work?..."
It sounded a bit high to me, but then again, I haven't bought or swapped a motor mount since 1985.
Is $336 too much to have this done? Is it possible to do it yourself?
The thought struck me that he was looking to make a few $$$ to make up for the warranty/recall work on the tranny.
My tranny won't be in until tomorrow, so I have this evening to decide. I appreciate your opinions and answers.
Thanks,
Czar

i dont know if it's high or not.. but i would let them do it cause you wo'nt be paying for labor..
and i'm guessing that motor mounts must be a bitch to replace.. it just sounds difficult/time consuming..? labor will probably jack that price wayy up.

they told me the same.. but that sounsd like a better price than what they quoted me
520 for parts n labor
i went to a local mechanic and said only one was broken and now im getting it installed today for 125.. big difference

I was doing some thinking about this whole situation with the motor mounts- The damn things had to break when the tranny went tits-up. I mean, the car was bucking like a bronco trying to find 3rd gear as I was trying to get off to the side of the road in heavy traffic.
I called Acura Customer Care and told them as much, and stated that if their tranny hadn't broken, neither would have the motor mounts.
They opened up a case file on me, and I'm awaiting word from "on high". We'll see- I figured it was worth a shot.
Thanks for all of the answers,

with the hood up put it into drive and hold down on the brakes. push the gas a little and have a friend watch. yoiu should see if it is broken.
The front motor mount is not too hard to change. My dad and i changed mine out by jacking up the bottom of the engine with a jack and we placed a 4x4 piece of wood underneath to distribute the weight. then we took off all 7 bolts and that was that. They are hard to reach though.

Update: 7/6/05
Acura Rep called me yesterday and said that Acura doesn't normally cover engine mounts.
I presented a logical, businnes-like argument about the bucking the car did and the high-speed downshift to second gear, etc, along with the loyalty argument (other vehicle is a Honda Odyssey).
At the end of the conversation, the rep thanked me for being polite and for being a loyal customer. He then said as a gesture of good will, he'd cover 50% of the costs. I accepted.
After 43 years on God's earth, I'm finally starting to see the wisdom of politeness, tact and courtesy in certain situations. This was one of them. (But I still know how to raise holy hell if need be!)
Thanks to everyone for their replies and input.

Hopefully Suburban Acura won't give me too much trouble with mine. My car's still under warranty, so
