If your doing the 6 speed conversion, try it without replacing the 2 dash harnesses (upper and lower)

I honestly think the triple is bad. I dont like all the new detergents from the new trans oil going thru the old trans. Id rather mix than run all new and just do a simple drain fill.

my '03 (not under the official warranty) TL-S has ~67K on the original tranny. it had the jet kit installed per the recall notice by the previous owner.

every now and then when stomping on it to get around someone or merge on the highway, it seems as if i get a little slippage before it upshifts to the next gear, but not always. (i rarely, if ever, use the sportshift mode - usually only when crawling in traffic).

i had the "60K service" done at the local dealer recently to sorta build a relationship and history with them, and the service writer all but guaranteed me that if the trans ever went out, he'd take care of it.

but like others have said, if it's going to go, i'd rather it go before the 10x,000 mile mark so i don't have to worry about it.

Yep, mine is officially toast @ 186K. . .

Interesting response from Acura's customer service line last night, though. Since I had complained @ around 92K about the slippage (stealer "didn't notice anything" at the time), I decided to go for broke and see if they would pony up something on the new tranny.

After three different 800 numbers, I get a lady who, after having me on hold for about 20 minutes, says that there is nothing that Acura can do/offer me on this. That didn't surprise me, but her reasoning did.

She said that after the stealer didn't find anything, I should have taken it to ANOTHER stealer for their evaluation/diagnosis of the issue. Because I didn't do that, the big A couldn't offer to do anything for me. I went from zero to full red in about 1.5 seconds. . .asked her - "So what you are saying is that I shouldn't trust the service department at my dealer?" Funny, she didn't have an answer for that one.

Looks like it is Scion time. . .

I would call back, and upon getting someone politely ask to speak to their supervisor. Go above who normally takes these calls. Tell them of this conversation and that you find it extremely unexeptable the response that you got from that person.

New transmission fluid doesn't have very many detergents. Transmission fluid doesn't really "clean" anything.

Yea, I forgot to mention in my post that I am starting to scrap together all the parts needed for the conversion on my '99. The reason I was getting all the harnesses is b/c you have them on your parts list. Will the CL-S ECU just plug into all the wiring that I have now? Also, will the speedo cluster plug right it or will I need to get the harness that goes from the ECU to the rest of the car? Like I said, the only reason I was asking about the wiring was because I thought I would need EVERYTHING on that list. Now it seems that I don't (?)

The ECU doesnt plug into a single dash harness. It simply plugs into the engine wire harness. The harnesses i know you will need are the 2 cabin to engine compartment harnesses. Like i posted in the 6 speed thread, i would try like mad to keep the 2 dash harnesses. That way you dont have to rewire the door locks windows radio airbags etc..

First original tranny: 55k miles
Second tranny: 10k miles ( approx 65k miles on the odometer)
Third tranny: till presend ( 92k miles on the odometer).

I have 2002 TL-S

well i bought this car with 96k. i'm not sure what the guy before me did.
but i can tell that he maintained the car very well.
when i was at the dealership once, i asked him if he can tell me if this is the original tranny. and he said yes.
i just replaced ATF once since. and driving smooth most of the time. no sign of any problem.

but from talking to my mechanic , he said only 2-5% of the cars had the "problem".
so if that is the case ..... not sure i should be worried .

Danny take NOTE: The person who started this thread- now has a trans failure in a major way- the azine jinx took only 7 days after starting a - my trans is perfect thread-
to seek its revenge.
While it does only fail on 2% of the population- narrow that down to members of a technical help forum and that % number jumps.

yes i understand. beyond me what is the real % of failure.

if you think about it , 5% of 1million car that using this transmission is 50,000 pissed people . that will make LOTS of noise on the internet.
when reading here on this forum , you get the feel that it hits almost everyone.
BUT that pretty common on internet forum. USUALLY only people with the problems bother to go to the internet and read/write about it. so we need to be careful assuming by the impression we get here. this is not real statistics. it's just based on
feel.

i'm not saying there is no problem. there is ! i'm just talking about the ratio and chances .

it does suck to drive a car and to know that it can hit you at any point without any warning. i really like the car , and would not want to sell it because of a "maybe"

Most trans give warning signs that any TL driver should have read the symptoms list and be aware of. For one to fail- without warning at all- is pretty rare.
If you have a replacement unit or still have warranty- why would you sell the car- to buy something else with its own problems?
As for 50k pissed people- why be upset when getting a 4000$$$$ trans handed to you free with a loaner car to boot!

well , if i was buying a new TL and transmission with go bad. i will be pissed still no matter what kind of service i would get.

my tranny is most likely original and in 3k miles i'm out of warranty.

that's why selling cross my mind. but i don't think i will. other cars got other issues.

before i bought this car i was looking at Audi A6 2.7T. if you think transmission problems is big deal ... rebuilding Turbos on the A6 is 6k !

On my 1996 2.5 I got 160k on my tranny. Change my fluid every 7500 miles with Honda ATF.

On my 2004 I have 48k so far and still counting.

At 151,000 and climbing on my '99 . I used to do a single drain/fill twice per year with Mobil 1 ATF. However, the last couple of years, the old fluid has been coming out very red, so i only do it once per year.
When i shift into drive or reverse, i let the tranny "click" into gear before i give it any gas. It may not make a bit of difference, but so far so good.

register with acuracare and call them to register as well
The over-mileage is not an issue- my dealer has done several ~goodwill replacements~ at 120k and recently at 144k for a good customer- no charge!
They can also do partial payment on each parties side and you may pay 600 labor or something like that, of a $4000 total

the dealer may only keep paper copies of records 3 years but their computer retains knowledge of anything they have done, and ACURA 800# is the warranty center/customer care. They have 3 different systems and know anything they did as warranty or recall on the car-

change you fluid, change your fluid, change your fluid. it only holds 3qts and there is no filter. mine gets changed every other oil change and it now has 190k

It holds 7.x but only drains a little over 3 b/c the rest is trapped inside.

The trans holds 7. something qts but you can only change out 3 qts at a time. Much is trapped in the torque convertor - just like a chevy 350
Thats why the 3 qts X 3 times in a row with 5 minute drive between is the most effective method.

2000 TL with original tranny @ 143K . The jet kit had been installed, along with the single 3qt. fluid change twice a year using Honda ATF. No problems yet,

Yes that is 4spd 99 tranny, actually I just drove it and it is 182,600 now on original...
I usually drive 3spd in city, and use 4spd interstate... I rarely use tiptronic...

I had 78K on my 2003 TL-P and since I don't drive my car hard at all, I figured "it will never happen to me". The dealer said that as soon as it starts slipping b/n gears, they replace 'em. Period. I got the feeling when talking to the service rep that this is a fairly common occurence, but that is just a guess since I have no facts to back it up with.

According to many acura dealerships and members here- the dealer sees 1 to 4 of these trans failure gen2 cars per WEEK, so its simple to diagnose- complete paperwork- give a loaner car, and get paid by acura during this especially slow season for auto repair.

In general- this year has seen Acura getting more generous with replacements- warranty and goodwill replacements. Thanks Acura!!
