Well you have started a series of events which will lead to failure of your trans!!!
1:You belong to azine and 2: you started a thread on how great the trans is doing.
Last guy to do that a month ago- a week later poof! no more trans

The original transmission on my 1999 TL made it to 173,000 miles.

Note that the 1999 TL uses a 4-speed transmission while the 2000-2003 uses a 5-speed. Statistically, the 4-speeds are more reliable than the 5-speeds.

I think I read of another 1999 TL transmission that made it to 200,000 miles.

99tl's are not really the problem cars, its the 00's to 04's cuz acura added that 5th gear. the 00-04 tl's and later use honda's "h5 transmission" wich was their first 5speed transmission. the 00-04's were hondas first attempt at it and unfortunately for all the 00-04 guys, yall are kinda like hondas ginny pigs, but eventually honda got it right with the 05+ tl's

Its not "Because" they added a 5th gear. It has nothing to do with it.

k maybe its because they didn't use planetary gears like other car companies. they used their own system , hondamatic gears

I think the GM TAAT unit lacks a planetary gear set as well, but those units last over 200k+ miles quite easily with regular fluid changes. Too bad you need to install a new valve body every 100k or so though.

99 TL with 116,000+ on original tranny.

And it's the 3rd gear clutch pack design that was the problem with the 5-speed trannys.

Hopefully, pay attention to the shift points, 1-2 and 2-3, like you are driving a stick shift, that will probably ease the problem.

i know this topic has been beaten to death but is there any possibility that the harder you drive this car the faster problems occur with this tranny.

I was reading one of the many "tranny failure" threads on this forum , and I noticed more tl s-type's with tranny failure than regular tl-p's.

and still no one here has posted on this thread stating that they own a type-s with over 100k on original tranny.

I drive pretty agressive, and I have no signs after 50k so far. Believe me I want it to go out, but I'm not going to damage it on purpose. I still change the fluid every 15k. It's a hit or miss deal. The reason I want mine to go is because I want to keep it once it's out of warranty. I don't want to spend $4k on a car that will be 8yrs old and needs a new tranny.

I have the "later" 03 where they think it was fixed, but according to all posts on here it's the same damn failure. I just hope there wasn't SOME improvement, and that my good maintence habbits are prolonging the trannies life UNTIL I'm out of warranty. lol

I love the car so much, it' has everything I want in a car. (wish I found one with navi) but I could always go aftermarket for that. I have pretty good hookups with 2 dealers here so I don't think I'll have a problem. I def think I'll be covered up to the 109k even though I'm not under that warranty.

Some people beat on them, and they go, some people drive regular and they go. You can't do anything about it. Anyone that is out of warranty either because of time/mileage the only thing you can do is be on top of the fluid changes. Keep it clean and maybe do the 3X3 drain/fill once a year. As it wears you will be keeping the metal shavings out of the tranny causing further damage/wear.

I had 143k on my orignal tranny in my 99 before I had it rebuilt. I would have made it to 150k probably, but I didn't want to risk it since it was starting to slip from time to time.

Yeah I shouldn't, trannies and brakes seem to be the plague of Acura. Sent you a PM last week on brakes.

Im going to do a tranny fluid change soon at Acura. Anyone know how much that would run me? I know valvoline charges $130 but I would rather bring it to Acura.

Just take it to a Honda dealer. A drain and refill runs between $49-$79 usually.

186,300 on original '99 TL tranny. But it is in the shop at this moment for MAJOR hot upshift/downshift issues. Let us pray. . .

looks like 4speed automatic from 1999 has had the most luck

A few 00-03 tl-p transmissions with high miles, some with 100k or over.

but so far not even 1 tl-s original transmission with over 100k.

horsepower and the way the cars are driven must have something to do with faulty transmissions.

Exactly the situation I'm in right now. The tranny went out on my 99 a few weeks ago at just under 145K miles. It's just sitting in the driveway at my mom's house collecting pollen.

Does anyone know of a good place that I can find the wiring and harnesses for the interior? I would love to find them used instead of paying like $200 a piece for them.
Upper instrument harness 32117-S3M-A31
Lower dash harness 32150-S3M-A32
Right side cabin to engine comp harness 32100-S3M-A12
Left side cabin to engine comp harness 32120-S3M-A20

KS- try the local auto recyler yard- they have a statewide and nationwide setup to find parts from each other. Or this on internet thing- I think you can look stuff up there too

For those changing ATF= please read owner book-
the correct way is drive car 15 minutes- drain 3 qts- thats all the trans will give up at a time- refill and drive 5 minutes- drain 3 qts- refill- drive-repeat 3 times for 9 qts total. Thats as good a washing out of the old 7.3 qts as is possible. Anything less is like changing the engine oil and not the filter.

Actually, while I DO agree that the triple drain and refill method is the best and removes as much old fluid as possible, the official party line from Honda is to only do ONE drain and refill during a routine service. The triple drain and refill procedure is only mandatory if the transmission has been contaminated.

I dont know nuthin bout no honda party line- I only know whats in the owner book and what my belief in correct oil changing requires- plenty of detailed threads already

If you want to believe that nothing is coming apart in your trans as we speak.....

maybe honda techs are lazy and dont have a drive thru oil change- and its a waste of the techs time to put the car on the lift repeatedly

I never said I was against it, in fact I am for the triple drain and refill procedure. I just want people to be aware that that is NOT the required service procedure per the factory service manual and the Honda owner's manual.

The repeated drain and refill procedure is only required if the unit was contaminated with a fluid other than Z1.
