the long time tl and cl member have been through this painful activity.

There was hopes from Unichip guys in sonoma,ca but turns out that the modifications that they make only do well once. Once you restart the car it loses all the modification you have done and remaps the engine to the proper factory settings.

I met one of the CL guys who spent the money for it and said he really did not get any performance gains.

Honda still owns the rights to the code which controls our engines and will not release it for development of better performance of our cars. The chip manufacturers also are bound to honda's legal agreement to not release the specs either...

So unfortunately we are just stuck with bolt on performance gains.

Jet Performance stated that they were testing chips, but still needed more time. Their expectations were to have something by September or October.

I've always been skeptical about these "chips" that alter the characteristics of the car. Not to cast any aspersions on the software gurus hacking out modification code, but I really doubt that the result of their work is as thoroughly tested and balanced (safety vs. performance vs. handling, etc) as Acura's own.

I wouldn't touch a mod chip with a 10-foot pole. There's no such thing as "perfect" code (including Acura's), but there is such a thing as probability of error, and I would sooner take my chances with Acura's labs than someone else's.

Actully, there are some good tuners out there turning out performance chips. Some manufacturers actually offer tuner chips as factory options. Such as Dinan for BMW. To me the bigger question about using performance chips is that they can negatively impact gas mileage and exhuast emissions. Auto manufacturer's design chips to meet certain government regulations and that's the bigger issue.

BTW, our cars aren't speed governed, meaning we have no governor chip. We are aerodynamically drag limited. Yesterday on I-75, I sprayed my nitrous in 5th gear while annihalating an IS300 and before I knew it I was at 145 and climbing. I had to back off the throttle though cuz I felt a bit uneasy at those speeds.

I've always been skeptical of the chips as well. I seem to remember Car and Driver doing a comparison of a few different BMWs, I think all M Roadsters, w/ different chips including Dinan and the stock chip. All the gains they where able to quantify were minimal. I think top end was a tad higher but straight line acceleration was something like 0.1 sec better, which most magazines say is not significantly different statistically speaking. I'm sure I don't have the article anymore -- I remember hearing the wife once say "You have too many car magazines lying around! Can't you get rid of some of them?!" Damn wife. But I look for it anyway.

Thumbs up

Mugen made a chip for the S2000. Maybe they will wake up and make one for the Inspire keeping in mind Acura owners will buy it.

My NOS set up is as follows. I have an arming paddle switch which activates the system. Then once the system is armed I have a gas pedal activated switch that sprays the nitrous when the throttle is floored. You are only supposed to spray Nitrous at full throttle which makes this the ideal setup that most nitrous kits utilize.

Just a question......how much does a nitrous kit go for? And what are the negative affects of it.........what are the different setups available?

I paid $620 installed. There really are no negative effects unless you spray too high of a shot or you spray too often. You can get a dry nitrous kit, a single fogger wet nitrous kit, or a 6 fogger direct port nitrous kit. The latter being the best but most expensive option. I suggest you go with a single fogger wet NOS kit. That is what I am running and I am VERY satisfied with it. Just don't spray over a 70-80 shot, and make sure that you change out the stock platinums to copper NGK's or Zex nitrous spark plugs. I prefer the Zex being that they are designed for nitrous use. Never run a platinum plug when using nitrous, they will melt.

Yes - and in most all cases it is easy to tell that it has been installed even if you remove the system before taking the car to the dealer

How can the dealer tell that it was installed if you emove it? Isn't it just bolt on?
