Officially, the TL doesn't stand for anything. Unofficially, some have said the TL stands for "Touring Luxury", RL stands for "Refined Luxury", CL stands for "Coupe Luxury". The NSX stands for "New Sport eXperimental" Not sure if there's any ones for the RSX, MDX, or TSX.

The new model Inspire is equivalent to the 7th Gen Honda Accord, old Inspire is equal to the 2nd Gen TL.

Ah, I was always under the impression that they meant something internally to Acura but they were never officially called that ... kind of like how DVD = Digital Versatile Disc, but officially DVD means nothing.

Thats not true. OFFICIALLY...

The 1998 Acura TL sedan is designed to be a touring luxury automobile and offers a sporty and more youthful alternative to traditional luxury cars.

I heard that since the TL came after Acura stopped making the legend, that "TL" really stands for "The Legend". So I always thought the TL was the new legend.
I dunno. Would be cool if it was true.

I mean, I understand where you get the idea, but if you asked Acura, what does TL stand for, would they say Touring Luxury, or would they say "it doesn't stand for anything" ?...

We're talking details here at this point, but the document you linked doesn't actually say what TL stands for which is what I'm kind of getting at when I said unofficially thats what it stands for.

For example, the International Organization for Standardization (aka ISO), says on their website (source: http://www.iso.org/iso/en/aboutiso/i...ion/index.html)

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of standards. Although ISO's principal activity is the development of technical standards, ISO standards also have important economic and social repercussions. ISO standards make a positive difference, not just to engineers and manufacturers for whom they solve basic problems in production and distribution, but to society as a whole.
Making it fairly clear that ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization (even though that acronym isn't in order). But Acura's press release doesn't say "The 1998 Touring Luxury (TL) sedan is designed to be...", details details, I know.

RL = Acura Legend
TL = Acura Vigor

In Japan and Europe, the RL is still sold as the Honda Legend where there's no such thing as Acura.

LiQice:

In addition to that link, I have brochures and press material for the 1st generation TL which specifically states it is Touring Luxury. There are "Fact Books" (that are given to Acura dealerships) that include an introduction to the cars.

Specifically, I've talked to several Acura marketing types at auto shows and TL is Touring Luxury officially. I've seen it in print in auto reviews and newspapers as well.

On the other hand, since about 2000 or 2001, Acura has not mentioned touring luxury for the TL as much, as they are going towards a more sport-oriented target for this car.

I remember it had said Touring Luxury when I first began looking at TL's in 99.

I read in some magazine, Money or something where they tried to explain the names of luxury cars. They also stated, Acuras mean nothing with their names.

The new TL stand for "Totally Loaded" and I have proof:

http://www.autonet.ca/AutonetStories...m?StoryID=9378

Just kiddin of course

I've gotta assume Ken is right since he's been in the know on Acuras longer than I have and with the car brochures that probably are more accurate than anything else.

Sometimes names are too successful. Honda Motor's Acura division produced a popular Legend sedan from Acura's debut in 1986 through the mid-1990s. But the Legend name inspired more devotion than the Acura name. "We wanted anyone who was driving an Acura to think first that they were driving an Acura," says Honda spokesman Andy Boyd.

Acura now does what almost every other luxury nameplate does--abandons names altogether. Acura makes an RSX, a TSX, a TL, an RL and an MDX. They aren't exactly poetry, and the letters stand for absolutely nothing. The idea is that people driving smallish, exclusive brands will think and talk of the brand, and not the nameplate

Does it really matter at the end of the day whether its official or not?

I only said something because I read an article similar to the Forbes one which says that they don't technically mean anything, like I said earlier similar to how DVD officially means nothing but the original idea was DVD stood for Digital Versatile Disc.

Even if it isn't "official", we know that internally or at some point during the TL's life, Acura intended TL to stand for Touring Luxury. They may not come out and say it anymore, but thats what the lettering is supposed to mean.

So at the end of the day, if you're wondering wtf TL is supposed to mean, its "Touring Luxury". Official or unofficial thats the answer.
