MAXIMA VS. TL / TL-S -------**REALITY**
When are you guys gonna realize that these posts go up to get a reaction back. We buy Maxima and TL's for attention. We do alot of other things for attention. Posting a hate post is just another example. It's all good fun to me. I can put a post out there that says "I can beat you or I have a better looking car or a better deal was made with my car." The reactions I would get are funny to me. This might not be true with everyone.

I agree, why can't the moderators leave this type of thread alone. I find it quite fun as the one thing the Maxima owners cannot deny, the back end is ugly, which was the main reason I did not buy one, other than the fact it is a Nissan, and I think Honda makes another vehicle. The same thing happens on the SuperHonda board, and some loser gets riled up and the insults, icluding racial gets out of hand. It won't be long before this thread is stopped.

I posted this very thing topic a few days ago and it was quickly closed because someone on this board (not naming who) got all upset because he didn't believe that I saw a CL-S running upper 15s at my track.
Anyways, I am up for some friendly track racing. At the track, you've got NO EXCUSES. "Run whatcha brung". I'll be at KCIR this Sunday.
As for the TL-S vs Maxima debate on which car is better. I'd say "if" I was in the market for a luxury cruiser that was relatively cheap ($32K) I'd be looking at the 5 speed IS300 or the TL-S. The Maxima SE 5 speed is about $4000-5000 cheaper, but I'd say it isn't quite up to the TL-S standard (don't forget that the Maxima is only a Nissan, not an Infiniti). IMO, once the Maxima SE-R (260hp, 6 speed, suspension)comes out, things will get nasty pretty quickly. Out of the box performance between the TL-S and current Maxima SE are just too close to call assuming the Max has the 5 speed. However, "if" I wanted a new sedan, I'd be saving my money and would be at my Scooby dealer picking up a blue WRX with the STi options (body kit, wheels, exhaust), for $27500

I've mentioned several times before (w/ no bashes on American quality) how satisfied my buddy is with his '99 Buick Regal GSE -- in fact, if it holds up over the warranty period of four years -- I would have to say that THIS car -- the Regal GSE -- is in fact the best bang for the buck in four-door, near-luxury -- The ride is solid, the quality of his car is impecable (sp?) and the paint finish is a dual black/grey -- beautiful. I've driven this supercharged banshee several times and I LOVE it. It's got juice right off the bat, and has more punch it seems than the TL Type S. We've dragged twice now, and the race was dead even to 70 mph! And considering he paid $25K for his car w/ MOST of the options the TL TYpe S comes w/ -- what a deal! Sorry, no manual in either the GTP OR the Regal GSE - but just wait until the Buick Regal GNX '03 model comes out w/ the 300 horses, intercooled engine, new cold-air induction, and borla exhaust kit -- STOCK! It's complement in pontiac will be the 350 horse LS-1 powered V8 GTP -- w/ the Aztec's four-wheel drive system and same intake/exhaust mods seen onthe GNX. This will all be under $30K to compete w/ the Euro and Jap. sports sedans --
You want competition for the TL-S other than the Mad Max? It's definitely out there.

There is an article I was reading in the April '01 issue of Motortrend discussing the Eigenbach (sp?) or Eimenbach Modified Max -- stats included lowered suspension, stiffer springs/shocks, 300hp, sportier cam shaft, and 0/60 stats @ 5.8 seconds and 14.5 in the 1/4 mile. This was one of the editors behind the wheel of the 5-speed, and he couldn't comment enough about how much he loved the added juice and the tighter ride. However, pushing hard below the 6.0 0-60 barrier in front-wheel drive cars has always been a challenge, and one that isn't met by many carmakers often. The front-wheels are just doing too much: steering, balancing the weight of the engine, putting the power down on pavement at the same time... not to mention on take-off, traction is being lost to the weight being shifted to the back wheels.
I think the 3.5L 260 hp Max will definitely close the deal on any possible 5-speed competition out there under $30K in the front-wheel drive market, but it too will have its limits due to its front-wheel drive "curse" -- now, the Max as a rear-wheel drive sport sedan -- now you're talkin'!!

I think the TL-s is maxed out with respect to the HP that a FWD setup can handle. If the Regal comes out with a 300hp and retain the FWD setup, I would not be terribly impressed with it. If they take the AWD route, then that is something that would catch my attention.

I think the domestic counterparts to the Audi's and Subarus should step in w/ their AWD versions to combat the sales of these euro AWDs. Not that GM isn't already accounting for 20-30% of auto sales in this country, buuuuut...
Cars I'd like to see an AWD package would probably include the Regal and GTP.

I think comparing cars and saying what you like and don't like about the cars is fine, it has created some very lively conversations.
In fact, there are a couple of threads that are pretty good comparing the IS and TLS. Myself and Mr. Hyde have obviously left those alone because they are very good threads.
The only time a thread has been locked or deleted is when it is
1. Unrelated to the TLS
2. People start to flame each other
3. Insults are exchanged
otherwise, feel free to debate things, it spreads knowledge and allows for free expression of opinions.

I bought S2000 to get my wife attention she wanted. I got TL-S to be a family car.
I'm all for discussion threads against another car, but I do not appreciate bad language and name calling just because someone likes a certain car whether it's TL-S or another car.
Moderators wouldn't be doing their jobs if those threads are kept alive. In some instance, I do believe some users and IPs should start getting banned for personal attacks.
It's just my opinion and suggestion. Moderators do work for the forum without pay. I'll take it the way it is, but my visit frequency obviously depends on how comfortable the forum is. I'd rather have nicely moderated classy forums than a jerry springfield show.
You never know....may be it's me who's out of place.

You are right. There is no need to go crazy. I think it is funny how the bashing has centered around Max's and TL's. Are there no other cars out there that can compete? If I said something about a GTP, then American build quality comes into play (at least they have good paint-something TL and Max suffer from). What about a Camry or Accord(I know I am not supposed to say that word in this forum). Build quality is great, looks - uh, the ugly stick comes into play. The reason these two keep butting heads, is because they are as close to equal in terms of performance, value, and looks (personal preference) as two cars can get. Enjoy what you have or get what you want. That is the only way to be happy with what you drive.

I don't know if anyone noticed -- but now that we're all keeping this particular thread "mature" and non-vulgar or offensive, there seem to be much fewer posts than say if it was more the old: "Maxima kicks the TL-S's ass anyday!" or v.v.
Interesting.
Interesting.

Simple. It's harder to form a consistent, rational response than to throw the easy knee jerk reflex.
As the discussion matures even more, it can grow downright cerebral, but the cost of that is that many would-be participants fall by the wayside. (Picture the "Missing Link" scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey.) The discussion ripens into a cozy little tyranny of seasoned Internet expressionists. Usually soon after that, consensus/mutual respect of differing viewpoints is reached, and the discussion terminates.
Such is the fate of mature discussions. Flamewars are self-sustaining, while intelligent discussions are self-extinguishing. The ignorant go forth and multiply, while the enlightened practice the restraint that would ensure a future for our world. Left with a forum of flames and a world of ignoramuses. Talk about irony. Talk about Darwinism turned on its head.

The Buick GNX or the AWD LS1 GTP aren't going to be making it to your dealerships anytime soon. Those models were one-offs featured in Motor Trend a few months ago. Neither Buick or Pontiac said these models were going into production. GM isn't like Ford's SVT (Lightening, Focus, Contour, Mustang Cobra). GM doesn't have the balls to make cars like this. Also, the 4T65E auto tranny in the 3.8 SC is already taxed by the 240hp/280 ft/lbs of torque. I don't see how GM would be able to make a GNX with 300hp or a GTP with a LS1 that could support this kind of power reliably.
As for the Maxima, the next generation Maxima is gonna be rear-wheel drive. The word is it will share the underpinnings of the new Infinti Q45. Yes, the Maxima is moving up in size and the new Altima will take it's place. The Altima will be available with the 240hp 3.0 V6. The Maxima will be available with a 260hp motor and later on with a 300+hp V6 or possible V8.
Also, the Skyline GT-R will be state side as a Infinti model. Yummy......

I have heard, from several sources on the web, and a couple of Nissan dealers, the 2002 Maxima will get a style "refreshening" and get the 3.5 engine, around 260 HP. The 2004 Maxima (to be all new), to be introduced in early 03, is supposed to be on a lengthened platform of the 2002 Altima, to be introduced at the 02 NY Motor Show this week (supposed to be available with a 240 HP V6). Time will tell what's what!

Yeah.. in 2004, I hope everyone realizes how many new, AWESOME front-runners every single car manufacturer will have -- I'm sure Toyota will have a sports sedan to compete w/ the Max, and I can't wait to see what Lexus is churning out pretty soon -- the advent of the IS430 w/ a 6-speed manual is something making MANY MANY Lexi fans drool at the moment.
I'm sure the Nissan Line-up will be impressive -- but Acura is also going to be debuting their RWD V8 RL as well as the $70,000 V8 powered NSX. Further, they fully intend (this is straight from acura) to manufacter an Acura built off the S2000 platform w/ a slightly more aggressive nose and possibly a longer wheelbase. The TL-S will feature the VTM-4 w/ the 300 hp supercharged V-6 in '03 that will run for approx. $40K. It'll feature a serious suspension, and will be analogous to the M3/S4 in terms of handling (not COMPARING them, but a very very stiff ride w/ tight cornering).
Can't wait -- <checking my watch> only THREE MORE YEARS!!
By then I'll be in the market for an E55.
