Manual shift mode?

Who uses manual shift mode as a daily basis when driving their TL?...I dont....all my cars Ive owned were manual standard trannies and Im tried of shifting already...although the TL dont have a clutch...Im still to lazy to go on manual shift mode.....hmmmm do you think the cause of our tranny issues is caused by daily use of shift mode?....

i use it on a daily basis for more "spirited" driving. using it wont damage the tranny unless you downshift to brake (thats a big ). our trannys just wear prematurely and fail, chances are even if you drove like a grandma it would still be toast sooner or later.

I've gotten so used to using it daily that today when I was driving in D5 I accidentally put the car into neutral out of instinct I guess.

i know someone with an 03 tpye S, and he drives like an old woman, he has also gone through three trnnaies....SS mode isn't the cause, and SS mode is prolly safer than driving with it just in drive, in SS mode the pressure is increased in the tranny to get a better response out of it with less slipping....

I use SS daily. Mainly to slow down when coming up to traffic or when i want to shift earlier than the computer wants to. Easier on the tranny I think.

Better read up on how these things work
BRAKES slow the car
Transmission gear select is to be in the right rpm/torque to accellerate off the corner, or late brake downshift turn in gas it and go corner
NOT for use to slow down in traffic
Extra pressure to be ready??---where are you geting this info
All matters of transmission should be deferred to fsttyms1- our Guru of TL gen2

Every time I drive it. Click over to SS out of habit.

1st tranny, still going strong ~65,000 miles.

Don't forget old woman even drives car when it is on fire, when tires are blown, when oil is empty, when brake pads are on metal, when cops are chasing them...

I hope he didn't totally drive like woman...

I meant to slow down maybe 5mph, not a LOT. I didn't mean to slow down from 65 to 30 with no brakes, thats just plan stupid.

If you are in stop and go traffic- put it D4 to make it work best- keeping it out of overdrive in that 35-45 range

USE the brakes- a tap is 5 mph
there are clutches inside the transmission- guess what goes out in our car???

Our trannies have more stress on them trying to make a smooth normal as compared to a hard SS mode shift. Check into shifter kits for cars makes trannys shift hard but extends the life of a tranny!

^^maybe not if combined with the innovative polly mounts.
BUT it has to be expensive, and our trannies are flawed from the getgo, i doubt it would help because if it did someone here would have done it already.

no one here will do it because the TL is a luxury vehicle...NO one should do it to a tl i was just stating a point that SS mode isnt bad for our cars but more benificial especially when hauling a**. Dont you agree?

If SS mode was so bad for our trannies, why would we be given the option?

like fsttymes said, its not the cause of our tranny failure.

although i dont know bout them shifter kits.... like orgnlprankster7 said, if it was beneficial, someone on AZ would have done it already.

In the owner book is the upshift-downshift speed limits in SS mode

you can slip it over at 100, brake to 96 or less and go into 3rd gear!
It wont go into a lower gear that would cause over-rev of engine
If you try clicking down and the number light flashes 3 times- that means you were too fast and its staying in the next higher gear, brake a little more and try again.
Now it will go into 2nd-- play with it- its fun and you are not hurting anything

There is no mechanical interconnect of the SS to the trans, the D5 isnt either

You trigger an electronic signal to the computer which looks at several issues and then shifts the gears
Running it manually from 1- D5 up the regular side gets same result- it shifts by science not brute strength

Hey hey didn't have to pull out the girlfriend card. i am a girl too. i just have very little experience with this stuff. my dad didnt want to me to learn stick shift and it would be super hard to keep going back with the clutch & all that with hells. yaddamean.. but if anyone has any pointers for the noob.. i am willing to take some suggestions.

I'll give it a try but i am seriously scared of screwing something up.

Ok i will say it again a shifter kit will have your car shifting really really hard there will be no smooth shifts that why no one has done it...nor should they do it on a TL. The TL is a fast car for whats its worth but its still a TL=Total Luxury....period dot

First bring the shifter to the left in D5 mode to the + - . Just tap the shifter up, a little bit before you want to shift. There is a slight delay, but not much. You don't have to let go of the gas at all, just keep your foot steady on the gas and push it up to the + . Just practice, it's very easy to get used to. Then when you don't feel like shifting, you can always just put it back into D5. You're not going to hurt anything unless you are down shifting to brake.

i didnt mean to... hell i had very little experience with that, yet something kept taunting me as id drive...

so i threw it in SS and pretended to know what I was doing... the best part of it is what 01tl4tl said

Yeah. Totally safe, no biggy. When you do this the car will be in the same gear it was when you were running Full Auto. Then you can up/down shift from there.

You can go back and forth between Full Auto and SportShift any time.
