In "D5" the computer tells the tranny when to shift based on several variables. In SS you TELL the tranny when to shift based on (one can only hope) some basic understandings of the mechanics of your car.
The tranny shift the exact same way just the sorce of the command to "shift" changes.
If you pay very close attention to when it shifts in D5 under all conditions and mimic that patern exactly in SS the tranny knows no differance.

The TL 5AT has 3 options:

Full Auto: Leaving it at D5, D4, D3 depending on what highest gear you want

SportShift: slap it to the left of D5 then up/ downshift like you're in WRC

Manual: Shift it down to 1 (very bottom of gate to the left) which should hold 1st gear, then 2nd then D3 up to D5 for the higher gears.

It's still an Auto tranny so in S/S mode and D3 to D5, you will coast when you let go of the gas unless you're in 2. Play around with it, also try to launch with the VSA turned off and see if you like it.

Actually, there are different shifting behaviours in D3 to D5 and S/S mode. In D4/ D5, the car feels like it's hunting gears and the torque converter locking up and releasing. Try it at about 45 mph at D4 and release the gas, it seems like the car "settles" in much lower gear, slap it to S/S mode and leave it at "4" and you will not get this sensation. There is no such "settling" sensation in S/S mode and the tranny stays in the gear you selected, unless the gearing is too low which it WILL shift down to a lower gear (when you decelerate and leave it at 4 or 5). S/S mode also prevents you from downshifting to a lower gear that may over-rev the engine. Even if you try, the gear selector stays at the appropriate gear (downshifting only) and will flash the LED.
