Major Maintenance Service Needed?
Major Maintenance Service Needed?
My 2002 TL now has 30,000 miles. The dealer sent me a notice wanting me to come in for a "Major5 Maintenance Service" that costs $459.95 (regularly $499). :wow: I compared this Major service with an "Intermediate Maintenance Service" ($249.95, regularly $284.95) and found that the $210 difference is from the following added service:
-inspect and retorgue all suspension mounts
-replace spark plugs
-check vacuum advance
-drain colling system and replace coolant
-change differential fluid
Do I really need this major service, or even the intermediate service? Will my warranty be voided if I do not spend this money? I have oil and filter changed regularly (not from the dealer), and I have a mnior service done at 20,000 miles. Are you all following these maintenance service schedule?
By the way, my TL runs great. Not a single problem so far.

Don't do it cause it is a waste of $$$. Every dealer will try to rip you off. As long as you change your oil/filter regularly then you should be fine. I have over 70K miles on my 99 TL and I have never took it in for any "major" service. And it is running great. The only one I am planning to get is the 100K mile service.
Per the owner's manual (the only thing you need to follow to avoid warranty claim hassles), spark plugs and coolant don't need to be changed until 105K miles, so you've got a long way to go. Transmission flush is suggested at 60K miles but the manual doesn't require it until 90K miles.
My '02 TL-S just rolled over 30K miles and it got absolutely nothing for its troubles. I do all my own maintenence, and per my schedule at the next oil/filter change (32K miles), the only additional things I will be doing is a tire rotation (free), clean and re-oil my K&N air filter (free), and a climate control filter change ($20 for filters). That plus the cost of my oil change means my 30K service cost me $30 or thereabouts.
Most of those services are "inspect this and check that." I do that myself at every oil change anyway since I'm under the hood and under the car.
