maintence/timing belt ?'s

i have a '99 tl-p with 104000 miles on it. i dropped by the dealership today cus the matn reqred light came on. the mechanic told me it that it comes on at certain mileages and it would cost $500-600 for the regular maintenence. he also told me that at 105000 the timing belt would need to be replaced. is this really necesary? and ive recently changed oil/air filters so should i take my car elsewhere and get the maintenence things done cheaper? any advice or help is appreciated

dude as far as i know, that maitenance light comes on like every 7000 miles to let you know about periodical maintenance. Like oil changes and shit like that. If you have the owners manual it will tell you what needs to be done at certain milage. I'm sure there are some things that you could do yourself, and some that you will have to go to a shop for. I really dont think that it would be 500-600 for some regular maintenance. Just my opinion though.

It is very very important and necessary. I would rather be early for a timing belt change rather than late.
if your belt snaps, then its time to get a new car, cause your engine would die

hmmm I wonder how many of us have had their timing belt snap. I have 142000 miles on my car and haven't had a problem. Maybe I'm just lucky.

In the owners manual it tells you how to turn off the light. I think it goes something like this:
Put keys in ignition
Hold down the mode and reset trip buttons for the odometer
Turn your car on and hold the buttons down for like 10-15 seconds and it will shut off. I do it every time the light comes on. After I do the maintenance of course.

If you are getting your timing belt replaced then change the water pump at the same time, those two go hand in hand.

YES u should change ur timing belt at 100k miles regardless of how much longer you are keeping the car...yes timing belts do break....if it does, your crank will keep spining but the head won't be on the correct timing and you pistons will bend ur valves.... as mentioned do u water pump at the same time u do ur timing belt too.... better to be safe than sorry....

Your running on borrowed time. With your mastery of the English language it doesn't surprise me that you're taking the risk.

Let me tell you, My bro have a 94 accord and he change hit at 190,554 miles and my dad have 93 accord the timming belt snap at 200.000k mile! on da way back from work, but he have a load of people in da car that why.

the old Integra went 175k on the oe timing belt
Then it grenaded the engine

Time is one factor, miles is another, so is ambient temperature

Anyone still changing the oil every 3000 miles needs more than an English lesson

wow.. some interesting posts.

Does anyone know for a fact if our 3.2 is an interference engine? That would determine (at least for me) whether or not the timing belt SHOULD be changed at 100k or NEEDS to be changed.....

The engine is an interference engine. So I vote yes on the belt change. I need to do it too since I have a 2K TL although it only has 78500 miles.

BIG TIME Interferance would be a better description- valves that are open and piston comes up in contact equals bent valves at the very least!!

Shred a belt on a TL and its cheaper to get a junkyard motor than try to fix all the internal damage
Too many small things can be hurt and not replaced, then 10k down the road......

Good thing I have a buddy with a CL-S motor lying around in his garage. If I should be "unfortunate" enough to break a timing belt, I've already got a replacement engine.

Does anyone know if you can reuse the gasket on the heads? I am doing my valve adjustment and timing belt tomorrow and didn't order that since I didnt see it in my helm book nor online on parts site, only when I type in the number someone posted in this thread. Usually my helm says replace or something but I didnt even find where it shows there is one.

What kind of a gasket is it?

You're talking about the valve cover gaskets. (head gasket is different) Anyways, they're made of rubber and re-using them is a toss-up. If the gasket is soft and undamaged you might be ok with re-using them. I say might because they can still possibly leak. If the gaskets are hard/brittle, replace them because they will not seal properly. Personally, I would just buy a new set so you don't have to worry about leaks a few thousand miles (maybe sooner) down the road. You don't have to go to the dealer to get them. As long as you get a good, well-known brand such as Fel-Pro or Beck/Arnley, they should be just as good or better than the OEM gaskets.
