Magnaflow resonator... 18" or 22"?

I'm putting together a magnaflow exhaust setup right now to order first thing tomorrow, but I don't know if I want to get 18" or 22" resonator.

Any advice/suggestion?

i got my magnaflows on a couple days ago w/o ne resonator...loud as hell, sounds like a civic on normal driving, so I've ordered an 18". Go with 18", most ppl usually decide between 14 or 18 so go with an 18".

what's the part number for the 22 incher? I was gonna go for 14 inch, but I would prefer to have the sound muffled as much as possible. I'm looking for more of a deep tone from the lower range RPM's and I want it to yell through VTEC..

let me know about the 22inch part number

thanks

Much appreciated...I think I will be putting this in within the next few weeks

BTW for those of you who don't know the part numbers for the magnaflows...here they are

Magnaflow 14829 muffler x 2 (you need two because dual exhaust...duh!!)
Magnaflow 10435 resonator (22 inch)
Magnaflow 14415 y pipe (unless you want the exhaust shop to do custom piping where you don't need a y-pipe...personally I think it looks cleaner if you have a y-pipe, and it's only 50 bux more or so.

Then you need an exhaust shop to do all custom piping. You will need piping from the mufflers to the y-pipe, then one long pipe from y-pipe into resonator, and one long pipe from resonator to cat.

You should preferrably use stainless steel since it tends to be stronger.

Also, spray paint the pipes with high heat flat black paint (same stuff you paint the stock y-pipe with) if you want to prevent rusting and/or make it look cosmetically nicer.

Thanks kris for all the info. This post couldn't have been made without fsttyms1's help....thanks again buddy!

later everyone.

right on the 14829's (double wall mufflers)
14827 (same muffler but single wall)
10435 (22 in. resonator)
10426/5 (18 in. resonator - model # number varies on inlet and outlet pipe size)
10416/14415 (14 in. resonator - /\ same thing)
10758 (Y-pipe # - you'll have to order this over phone, its not on site)

Uve got the rest down

Wait....(stupid question) how are you gonna paint the pipes after it's already been installed... raise the car up and try or just tell the exhaust shop to do it for you?

Ya, pretty much the same way you painted the y-pipe...except you will probably need to put the car on a jack. I would paint everything once it's installed on the car, don't try painting the pipes before they get put on.

Later guys.

4 inches

sorry it just adds more baffle to help reduce more of the resonance. the smaller the louder

the best way would be jack it up and crall under, undo the 3 bolts from the cat, unkook all teh rubber hangers and remove teh complete exhaust system (very easy) othere wise paint it in place. not hard either

LOL! OK, so is a 22" resonator the largest you can put in? Say suppose you want the Magnaflow exhausts to be as quiet as possible (like the Comptechs)...what size resonator would you need? Or is 22" the largest?

18 will be ok, i went from 22 to 18 and it got louder and a little less deaper, but thats the sound i was looking for. 22 is good for a deep sound, but it reminded me too much of the comptech sound down low. Up high the cans scream no matter what.

you can put more than one resonator on if you dont think the 22" will work. also, if you get an entire SS system you better use a TIG welder. At my shop a lot of people come in with their internet SS systems and want to have it installed with other aftermarket products. The problem is, I only have a MIG welder, and that will make where I weld rust eventually....I do spray it down with clear enamel to help it..but if you spend the money on a SS system, have the damn thing TIG welded. Also, dont have the muffler shop make the Y-pipe, its hard as hell to get right and we would much prefer the the customer to order the magnaflow one.

i agree with subinf on the y pipe. You'd be amazed how much flow changes with a shitty Y pipe design. The magnaflow Y pipe flowed much better than my custom fabbed y pipe. It sounded much smoother as well.

Sorry for bringing back an old post - what are the main differences between a TIG weld and a MIG weld?

Quick question for you exhaust experts: is it better to keep the stock resonator or go with the Magnaflow resonator? Not sure if the stock ones are good enough to clamp down on the Magnaflow exhaust sound or not. Thx.

Hey wait a minute. The specs on the muffler is 14x5x8 2.25/4 S-SWD-R-A-L ProductID=14827 /\
and you guys say a 22" or 18 " resonator will fit. Doesnt make sense. Help me see the light please.

the 18" Magnaflow resonator is a custom fit item...the muffler shop will have to cut the OEM pipe to make it fit. The resonator goes after the Y pipe.

well since this is almost a year old and i just found it i will finally respond...

tig is usually reserved for titanium, aluminum, etc..metals that MIG cannot weld correctly. you CAN weld aluminum with a mig, it just sucks ass...and smells bad...shitty weld, dont do it. tig on aluminum or stainless steel (retains the integrity of the metal=no rust on welds) is like oxyacetly welding only you control temp, etc. it took me a long time to learn how to tig well, mig was pretty easy after a few classes.

This thread is very helpful, thanks to all that contributed. I'm ordering my Comptech mufflers Monday and I'm going to buy a 22inch Magnaflow resonator and Y Pipe.

As I am about to obtain Comptech mufflers and I want 2.5 piping. So would I order this resonator 10436:

http://www.hottexhaust.com/search_re...&btnSearch.y=4

and this Y Pipe 10768:
http://www.hottexhaust.com/search_re...&btnSearch.y=7

And the rest would be custom piping from my exhaust shop?

Thanks,

Mark

i already have comptech mufflers. i have 2 questions

scenario 1: can i buy just the magnaflow 18" resonator to get a louder sound?

scenario 2: can i buy the magnaflow y pipe and resonaor and use if with my stock piping?

all this would have to be welded by a shop right?

you can have the shop do as much or as little work as you want done. if you want an entire system bent they can do that, or you can just cut and weld the mufflers onto your stock system.

Scenario 1: Yes, they will cut out the OEM box shaped resonator + OEM piping and then weld the 18inch magnaflow resonator in its place. If you have a TL-S you will need an 18 inch resonator w/ 2.25in inlet and outlet...if you have a P you will need a resontor with 2in inlet/outlet/

Scenario II: Same as scenario one, yes, but If you have a TL-S you will need an Y Pipe with w/ 2.25in inlet and outlet...if you have a P you will need a Y Pipe with 2in inlet/outlet

I think I've got the numbers correct here and all the bases covered...correct me if I'm wrong guys.
