I was just curious to find out whether or not they still charge a luxury tax on cars these days... Anyone know?

The Federal luxury tax on automobiles is repealed as of January 1, 2003. However, the state of New York might have their own version. Just call up your local Acura dealer. They should be able to tell you.

What was the tax amout before it was replealed? Someone told me it was 10% on the amount exceding $40K. Is this right?

It was anything above $50K. Was it percentage or just a fix number?

Of course they do, but I'm not sure if they do that on SUVs......

what really annoys me is that they charge gas guzzler tax on cars like the M5 but not on big SUV's.

Gas Guzzler Tax is imposed on all vehicles that applies. This is how u find out. You take 55% of the EPA city milage and 45% of the highway milage and if it is UNDER 22.5 MPG then u have to pay tax. There are 11 tax brackets, the less MPG the more tax.

The M5 is 16/21 MPG that is automatically under 22.5 MPG. Some big SUV haver better Highway milage that makes up for the low city milage
