Well, like I said in another thread about 528 VS TL. There ain't much you can do about it. It's all because of the gear-ratio. So what if your keep your rpm high enough or make the VETC engage earlier. The 4th is still a OD, and it will slow you down.

I am pretty sure that you can hang with the Bimmer before 100mph. The TL should be a tiny bit faster from 0-100mph. Now the faster you go, the more Cd will affect the acceleration. The SUV got huge frontal area, and heavier weight, but it also got a V8 and a gear ratio with high speed acceleration in mind.

Oh, and that's gonna be an V8 right? I would be impressed by the Bimmer if it was the 3L i6.

X5's are pretty damn fast, they can keep up with an AMG ML55, so i'm not surprised. As for the "it's the driver" comment, I don't see how this applies to a TL, since it's automatic, there's very little skill involved in racing it!

Were you using SS? I always have wondered why people use the SS when they race. The reason for this is I once read in Motor Trend that the TL automatic will run every gear up to redline and shift better than most drivers could.

Ofcourse I don't race my car. Any comments on autoshift versus SS shift?

The X5 4.4 has the same V8 engine as the 540. It does 0-6 in 6.5 seconds and has tons of low end torque. Because it has all wheel drive, it also launches really well.

phiTL: the car can detect when more power is needed (i.e. hwy passing, etc), and actually will rev higher if somebody slams the gas as opposed to normal driving.

With SS you can determine at what RPM you would like to shift except for 1->2 on 2000+.

With this comment it doesn't sound like you pay attention to your tach when you drive your car. (Not a flame)

Yup.... X5 4.4 0-60 is 6.7sec (R&T 6/00).. and its an AWD so if you have a TL-P... then yeah for speed over 100 its kidna hard to race em... *sigh*

Well, at least i smoked him on a curb but i still lost on a straighway. what do u guys suggest for more power at high speeds?

on another note, I destroyed (ok, beat- not destroyed) an older BMW 328 (before the current model) today to about 125mph. I have no problem pulling after 120 mph. This was with the AC on and 1 passenger.

Auto will shift very near redline if you floor all the way down. Then 1->2 shift is about 6.2-6.3K. On the other side using SS you can keep it at lower gear up to fuel cutoff 6.5-6.6K. Make some sense with comptech headers...

I personally leave the tranny in auto when I race. But, I do put it in first and go up from there. This way I can still shift when I want to. I can redline it in every gear. I think this is faster than both the SS and just leaving the car in Drive.

Another thing to consider is that German cars
are notorious for high speed crusin so that's
why it was still able to pull at such hi speeds and he had 8 cylinders.

I hope it was the X5 4.4 that you lost to because the 3.0 is slow as hell.

Only NOS will help you beat the Europeans on the high end. I had i/h/e/VAFC and a 740i still beat me with ease at high speeds.

Dude, don't feel bad about losing to the 4.4 X5. I have a 540i and I easily walk away from a TypeS at high speeds. It isn't that the 4.4 is astronomically fast, it's just that we have like 2 overdrive gears after 3rd.

Like someone stated about the 528i, you'll lose to those too after 100mph. It's just something about their gearing and our shitty 4th gear. Don't take my word for it, race someone that has a 528i and is willing to go the distance with you.

sorry to say this, but admit it guys... the 4th and 5th gear in TL do suck... there's nothing you can do about it at high speed if you have a stock TL.

Just shows that movies do have an affect on people. Fast and the Furious just makes you want to drive fast. What a great movie!

However I'll be the party pooper here too & tell you to just keep yourself in control. Maybe I'm just too old (28), but there is no way in heck, I will ever hit 125MPH! First of all there is little opportunity to do this here on the crowded highways of NJ and secondly I want to live a long and happy life driving my TL ;-)

Be safe and have fun!

Just be happy you saved $25K over what the BMW cost and get more than twice the gas mileage :-)
