LED brake/turn signal lights anyone?

Does anyone have any experience with replacing his brake/turn bulbs with LED drop in replacements? LEDTronics makes a pretty good substitute (Click here) for 1156/1157 bulbs.

The main advantage of LED lights are response speeds. During braking, you'll gain about 100 - 200 msec more response time because LED lights will come on almost instantaneously. They also run much cooler and at lower power, and will last virtually forever.

They run about $50 apiece ($84 for the high-intensity white backup LEDs, but I don't want those)... cheap insurance and looks cool too.

I was thinking about getting them but thought they would look weird because they are only going to be concentrated in a specific area of the tailight and it will kinda look like altezzas when they are lite up being that the outer portions of the light will be dim compared to the middle section where the LED is located.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have them, just want to see what they look like first!

Actually, the LEDTronics bulbs are supposed to address these problems. They have a 2-layer LED assembly. The top layer has LEDs facing directly forward (like you'd expect), and the bottom layer has LED's mounted radially so that it will illuminate towards the sides. It's supposed to take care of the "hot spot" effect.

hey Tim,

Any plans to let us know how good these bulbs are? Then once you say they're cool, carry them so we can buy from you?

I may volunteer to test them out on my TLS... I'd have to take measurements of the light bulb openings to make sure they'll fit in there.

If the use a lower voltage bulb, like the LED bulbs, will they trigger the "brake lamp" idiot light on our dashboard? You know.. the idiot light that tells us a brake light is out? Any thoughts??

Noam

I might be interested if you're the guinea pig! I'm tired of being the guinea pig!

Check out these...

http://datasheets.led.net/Pages/spid...d_lamps/40.htm

Lumileds makes something similiar to that but it comes with the clips to put it all together.

http://www.lumileds.com

But their site is down at the moment.

Whoa.. is that $50 per bulb??

Also, can't seem to find the bulb that fits the brake light(7440), but the 1156 can be used for the rear signal, and the 1157 can be for the front signal..

These parts may be hard to get... LEDtronics requires a $500 minimum order. However, you can email jean@netdisty.com (NetDisty is LEDtronics' wharehouse) with the order numbers off the LEDtronics site and that should work. They are still working on my order ... meanwhile my car is all taken apart. Better yet, just call NetDisty at 1-310-326-5806, probably be faster. If my order isn't shipped by tomorrow I'm going to make a call.

It's very hard to find drop-in LED replacements for the 7440 and 7443 bulbs that go into the brake light assemblies. If I'm going to replace bulbs with LEDs, brake lights will be my first choice.

After searching around, you can find RED 7440/7443 LEDs from www.directpart.com for about $20/pair. They also have 1157 red and amber replacements for $20/pair. But since they have no pictures I don't know how good they'll turn out.

Can someone confirm what light bulbs are used at these positions?
  • Front turn/sidemarker (one bulb only, right?)
  • Rear turn
  • Tail/brake
  • High-mounted brake
  • Reverse

I figured 1157 for front turns, 1156 for rear turns, 7445 for brakes, 7440 for high-mount brakes, 912 for reverse. Right? Right?

Plus you need 2 bulbs per side for the tail/brake lights, and 2 bulbs for the high-mounted brake light. That's a lot of bulbs!

The front turns signals use a single 1157 dual filament bulb. Just one bulb on each side of the car.
The cleared '02 rear turns use a 1156 bulb while the '99-'01 tails use a 7440 bulb.
The brake lights use two dual filament 7443 bulbs on each side of the car.

I think your other info is correct.
