key question
i was just wondering if you could turn the tl's, or any other car's key, into the type of flip out thing that the volkswagon's and audi's have. where you push the button and the key flips out like a knife or something. is it possible? are there companies that do that?
Trick-Key
Dude,
Just steal some Audi keys...then cut the Audi key out from the plastic key housing, then cut your TL key and insert and glue the metal portion into the Audi plastic key housing. Problem solved!
For a dude whose sig. says he's short on cash...you sure want to spend you cash on frivolous stuff. :p

well, i am short on cash, but what i was trying to figure out is how much it would cost to do this. plus, keys like that are f*cking awesome and are worth it!
also, i was gonna do this to my jeep grand cherokee keys, not my tl's keys. i am DEF not stealing anyone's keys, or cutting my own. is there any company out there that does this ish legit, or could modify mine?

I agree that those flip keys are pretty cool, but it would be a fair amount of work to make our keys do that. Get an audi remote. You probably would have to cut your Acura keyhead off, and store it somewhere in that black plastic housing and hope that it's in range of the receiving ring of your ignition switch. You'd then need to remove the audi key and weld your key into place, saving the orignal hinge. You'd need to find a way to squeeze your alarm remote electronics into the Audi case and connect the buttons on the case to your remote electronics.
The way I figure it, you'd have to weld, cut, solder and glue in order to get your key to do what the Audi keys do. I don't know of anyone that has gone through the trouble to do this either.

On this note, how exactly does the immoblizer work. Does the chip work by proximity to the ignition or the actual contact between the key and the ignition?

Actually, I'm sort of glad we *didn't* get the folding-type key like VW, Audi, etc. It's definitely phat but what happens when you decide (like I did--as well as many others) to get an aftermarket alarm? Now you have to carry around a non-functioning keyfob and the aftermarket keyfob to work the alarm. The only way I'd go for a folding key deal is if the cars came through with a *much* better OEM alarm system.
Besides, I really like my Acura Type-S key. Yeah, that's right--how many of you got stuck with the "ordinary" Acura key with the white logo? Mine's got the red Acura logo to match the Type S. Schweeet!!!

The transponder keys are wireless like that TI link says. I've started my engine with a duplicated key while keeping the actual key's head in close proximity to the ignition switch antenna. It only checks for a valid signal when you first turn the keyswitch to the on position. After that, it doesn't matter whether you have the real key or not.
Oh, by the way.... I have an '01 TL and it has the white Acura logo. Which I thought was another cool upgrade that the '01 models got in addition to the upgraded cupholders.
